Biography

Though very much a group effort, the ecclectic indie rock music of Hockey Night is essentially the brainchild of Minnesota native Paul Sprangers and his boundless well of creativity. Originally hailing from Red Wing, MN, in the northern remoteness of the American Midwest, Sprangers dabbled with four-track recording at an early age, distilling ideas from such late-'80s influences as the Pixies and Public Enemy. Hundreds of songs resulted, and the burgeoning songwriter eventually joined a local punk band, the Renegades, in hopes of putting his talent to work. Not much came of the Renegades, however, and Sprangers left the Midwest in 1998 for the streets of New York City, where he began attending school and resumed his homemade four-track recordings. By the end of the year, Fighting Electric Records released The Hockey Night EP, the first official Hockey Night release. The EP connnected with a sizable audience, especially back in Minnesota, where Sprangers maintained an important link. After spending several months in Spain as well as more time in New York, he returned to his native state to record Rad Zapping (2002) with the assistance of Jeremy Ylvisaker (best known for his work as the Fog) and Ed Ackerson (Polara). Lookout Records released the band's second full-length, Keep Guessin' in fall 2005.
