Biography

Culture Reject is the solo project of Michael McDonnell, formerly of Black Cabbage. Drawing from the drowsy, elastic rhythms of traditional African and Cuban music and imbuing his compositions with a touch of multi-instrumental glimmer à la Sufjan Stevens, McDonnel formulated a style of sweet-yet-gritty folk that put him in the same company, soundwise, as Bon Iver and Grizzly Bear. Culture Reject's self-titled debut full-length was released on White Whale in 2008 and featured a guest appearance by Jim Guthrie.
