Dirge

Biography

French post-metal/doom metal outfit Dirge first formed as a duo back in 1994. Initially embracing more industrial aspects of the genre, the group would expand in membership and sound, eventually drawing comparisons with such bands as Isis and Neurosis. The first changes started taking place in 1997, when the duo added one, and this trio began to explore more ‘noise' elements, and by 1998, were ready to put their work to format, releasing the album Down, Last Level that year. By the time of album number two, Blight and Vision Below a Faded Sun, in 2000, Dirge had become a bit more like their name, slowing down the pace, and -- most importantly -- extending the arrangements and songs to encompass a wide variety of changes and room to experiment. In 2004, Dirge released their third album, And Shall the Sky Descend, and spent the next year or so touring with such bands as Unsane, Nasum, and Cult of Luna. In 2007, now a five piece (Marc T. -- guitars, vocals, Alain B. -- drums, acoustic guitars, Christophe D. -- samples, Stéphane L. -- guitars, and Christian M. -- bass) released the critically well-received Wings of Lead Over Dormant Seas on the Equilibre Music label.
