A veteran of the North Carolina underground rock scene (where he was best known for his work with The Antiseen), vocalist/guitarist Gideon Smith founded The Dixie Damned in 1999 with the help of his old associate, drummer Boo Creepy formerly of Animal Bag. A self-titled E.P. quickly emerged, but Smith really took things to the next level when he embarked on a pilgrimage to legendary Sun Studios in Memphis where he laid down demos that would form the backbone of the group's full-length debut, Southern Gentlemen. Released in 2001 by Small Stone Records, the album also saw fit to introduce additional Dixie Damned members, lead and slide guitar player Mike Keleher, rhythm guitarist Brad fury and bassist Jose Carlos Wright.
