Helen Gross recorded 27 tracks for Ajax Records in New York City between May 1924 and March 1925, working with some of the best jazz players of the day. Not a blues singer in the classic sense, she worked from more of a vaudeville perspective, and her recordings feature -- in addition to some wonderful horn charts -- a preponderance of often baffling noise effects, which at times gives her songs the feel of a carnival sideshow.
