Biography

A virtuoso bassist who has dubbed his music "World Jazz" due to its World Music influences, Larry Steen is one of the better electric bassists around today. He attended Berklee (1982-84), the University of Miami (1985-87) and later on Cal Arts. Among his early concert appearances were dates with Jon Hendricks, Billy Eckstine and Ira Sullivan. After moving to the Los Angeles area, he worked as a studio musician, played with the Brandeis-Bardin International Klezmer Ensemble, recorded with Frank Strazzeri and Bill Perkins at the Stan Kenton "Back To Balboa" celebration and appeared at concerts with a wide variety of jazz and pop artists. Among the former have been Mose Allison, Ernie Watts, Brandon Fields, Eric Marienthal, Louie Bellson, Bob Sheppard, Bill Cunliffe and Mel Torme. Larry Steen's debut CD as a leader (First Move) was released in 1996.
