Biography

Chicago locals Racecar and K-Kruz originally formed underground hip-hop group Modill as a MC-producer pair in 2003 before joined by ThaiOne Davis in 2004. Drawing from Native Tongue-rap, jazz, and Chicago soul and electronica, producer/drummer K-Kruz shapes the group's breezy and progressive sounds for Racecar's and Davis' introspective commentary. Racecar first met Evanston, IL, native K-Kruz after becoming a member of Chicago hip-hop band FreeBasic, whose drummer was K-Kruz, in 2000. Signed on with local indie EV Productions, Modill's first 12", Change Form!, arrived in 2004 and featured Chicago MCs and frequent collaborators Diverse and LongShot. Davis was introduced as the group's third member on the group's second 12" single, Moves (2005}, which garnered the trio some positive press. Although it went largely unnoticed, their subsonic, jazzy debut LP, Midnight Green (2006), was very well-received in some underground circles. The lopsided praise towards K-Kruz's production prompted the label to release an instrumental version in mid-2007.
