Biography

Stephan Crump, equally adept on acoustic and electric bass, leads his own jazz quartet as well as an electric groove ensemble called Lavabox. Crump grew up in Memphis, TN, and received a bachelor of music degree from Amherst College in 1994. Soon after graduating, he toured the U.S. and Canada with the Tommy Dorsey Band. He then relocated to New York and joined the quartet of trumpeter Marvin Stamm. His resumé as a versatile sideman quickly grew to include Sonny Fortune, Johnny Copeland, Bobby Previte, Vijay Iyer, Liberty Ellman, Big Ass Truck, and Kevn Kinney, among others. Crump also composes music for TV and film. His quartet released its graceful, soft-spoken debut, Poems & Other Things, in 1997. Lavabox released a self-titled CD in 1998.
