Biography

San Francisco vocalists Martha Wash and Izora Redman comprised the duo Two Tons of Fun, later changing their name to the Weather Girls. They began singing together in gospel ensembles and choirs, meeting in the group NOW (News of the World) before turning to secular music. They gained initial recognition during the mid and late '70s as background singers for disco performer Sylvester. Their glorious voices capably supported his on the hits "Dance (Disco Heat)" and "(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real," plus his albums. The legendary performer/producer/composer Harvey Fuqua signed them to his Honey label that was distributed by Fantasy. They issued the LP Backatcha and the single "Taking Away Your Space" in 1980. They subsequently had three chart singles as the Weather Girls from 1982-1985, the biggest of which was "It's Raining Men" in 1982. The duo recorded three LPs for Columbia Records before disbanding in the late '80s.
