Aeternus, who claim to be "true dark metal," hail from the cold and rainy town of Bergen, Norway. Combining the raw sound of black metal with the deep vocals of death metal, Aeternus manage to maintain some originality in the crowded metal scene of the new millennium. Founding member Ares (bass/vocals), a former live and session member of the infamous Immortal, joined up with drummer Vrolok and keyboard/bass player Morrigan in 1996 to form the first incarnation of Aeternus. They signed to Hammerheart records the same year and released Beyond the Wandering Moon, their debut, in early 1997. That same year the band was invited to tour with black metal legends Emperor and Limbonic Art. After their return they released the EP Dark Sorcery followed by their second album ...And So the Night Became. Guitarist Radek joined the band, and with a second guitarist their 1999 release Shadows of Old showed a faster death metal-oriented sound that strayed slightly from the black/folk style that is heard on their earlier releases. In 2001 Aeternus greeted fans with two more releases, the EP Burning the Shroud and a full-length album, Ascension of Terror.

Biography

Aeternus formed in 1993 as a trio, composed of Ares, Erik Vrolok, and Morrigan. They released their debut album, Beyond the Wandering Moon, in 1997 on Hammerheart Records (now Karmageddon Media), and toured that year with black metal bands Emperor and Limbonic Art. Their second album, ...And So the Night Became, was released in several different formats, and was accompanied by a tour supporting Deicide. In 1999, they added guitarist Radek, and their sound moved from black metal toward death metal for 1999's Shadows of Old. Morrigan left the group in 2001, and their first album as a three-piece again was Ascension of Terror. They then departed from Hammerheart and released "A Darker Monument" on the Nocturnal Art Productions label in 2003. The group toured Europe in 2006 to support the Hexaeon release. Vrolok was replaced by S. Winter on drums early in 2006, but as of September 2007, Winter is no longer in the group, and Terris has been named as a replacement.
