Biography All Music Guide

All Music Guide:

Apparat (aka Sascha Ring) co-founded the German imprint Shitkatapult with Marco Haas (aka T. Raumschmiere) in early 1999. However, it wasn't until two years later that he would release his full-length debut, Multifunktionsebene, which quickly caught the attention of IDM fans worldwide. Known for his prolific output, he quickly followed this up with Tttrial and Eror no less than six months later and another full-length, Duplex, followed shortly after that. A slew of remixes and collaborations would follow for a wide variety of artists both experimental and dancefloor-friendly. He released the double EP Silizium in 2005, which took the Apparat alias in a decidedly different direction. He collaborated with BPitch Control labelhead/DJ Ellen Allien on the full-length Orchestra of Bubbles, which was released in 2006. The following year's Walls was his most creative and singular full-length. It was trailed by a diverse 2010 installment in !K7's DJ-Kicks series, which incorporated several dubstep and IDM tracks within an experimental techno framework. The Devil's Walk, a contemplative studio album, followed on the Mute label in 2011. His next full-length work was 2013's Krieg und Frieden, made with a 30-piece orchestra to accompany a stage production of War and Peace.

Based in: London, England For an artist who adopted the moniker theNormal, Daniel Miller's life and career have been anything but. In 1978, he one-upped punk rock with an analog synthesizer: Since the keyboard required no musical knowledge whatsoever, he reasoned, it must be even more punk than an over-driven Gibson Les Paul. He founded his… more »

Six Degrees of Apparat’s The Devil’s Walk

By Andy Beta, Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
