All Music Guide:

U.K. supergroup Crippled Black Phoenix is a progressive post-rock musical collective that has featured nearly 30 members in its rotating roster. A constant driving force is Justin Greaves of Electric Wizard and Iron Monkey, who started the band in 2004 with the help of Mogwai bassist Dominic Aitchison. In 2006, Crippled Black Phoenix released their first album A Love of Shared Disasters, and started concentrating on live shows, which often involved more than a dozen members on-stage. Resurrectionists and Night Raider were recorded from March of 2007 to August of 2008 at S.O.A. Studio in Bristol, and released in 2009, along with a compilation of songs from those two albums titled 200 Tons of Bad Luck . 2010’s I, Vigilante followed on Geoff Barrow's Invada Records, and sparked some attention with a stoner rock version of Journey’s "Of a Lifetime." The band followed up in 2012 with the more conceptual, (Mankind) The Crafty Ape.

History[edit]

Members of the band used to play in other bands (including Iron Monkey, Gonga, Mogwai, Electric Wizard and others). In 2004, Justin Greaves began recording primitive sounds he had in mind for years. He was encouraged by Dominic Aitchison, and their ideas would lay the backbone for Crippled Black Phoenix. The name of the band was taken from the lyrics of "Big Loader," a song on the debut album by Greaves' previous band, Iron Monkey.

Although originally having an unorthodox start, since all the band members were part of and busy with other projects at the time of the band's founding, Crippled Black Phoenix remained committed to staying together and forged their sound. The band writes what they call "endtime ballads," signifying both the slightly macabre nature of their songs and their unusual blend of styles as the final evolution in music. This blend has led to them being called everything from stoner-prog to freak-folk to doom.

Crippled Black Phoenix have made live shows a focus and have performed in unusual venues, using Victorian-era instruments in tandem with more modern instruments.Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{reflist}} template (see the help page).
