All Music Guide:

If you were looking for a day job that would reinforce the credibility of your garage punk band, you could hardly do better than to follow the example of Eddy Current Suppression Ring -- the four members of the group met when they were working at a vinyl pressing plant in Ormond, Victoria, Australia. Inspired by hard-edged, primitive rock in the manner of the Troggs, the Pagans. and X (the Aussie band, not the California punks of the same name), Eddy Current Suppression Ring got their start in late 2003 when guitarist Eddy Current, bassist Rob Solid, and drummer Danny Current were playing a few songs for the annual Christmas party at Corduroy Records, the pressing plant where they worked. They invited friend and fellow employee Brendan Suppression to sing a few numbers with them, and even though Brendan had never sung with a group before, everyone was impressed with his energy and ability to improvise lyrics, so the four decided to form a band.

Named for an electric gizmo that's part of a transformer, Eddy Current Suppression Ring cut their first single, "Get Up Morning," in 2004, and after lots of local gigging and a handful of 7"s and EPs, the band issued its self-titled debut LP on Dropkick Records in 2006. Dominated by tough, hooky tunes, no-frills musicianship, and Brendan's broad Australian accent, the album earned enthusiastic reviews from critics with an ear for garage and punk sounds, and the group formed its own label, Aarght Records, to release its second full-length album, 2008's Primary Colours. The album became an unexpected crossover success, rising to number six on the Australian charts and earning ECSR a nomination for Best Rock Album of 2008 at the Australian Music Industry Awards. It was released by Goner Records in the U.S. The band followed up the album with 2010's Rush to Relax, another fine slab of garage rock noise also released by Goner.

Biography[edit]

The band formed in 2003 when two brothers Mikey and Danny started jamming at the Christmas party at the Corduroy Records vinyl pressing plant where Mikey worked. They encouraged now-lead singer Brendan Suppression who also worked there, to ad-lib vocals into a tape recorder. The subsequent tape prompted the band's first recording, which produced a 7-inch single with A-side Get Up Morning.

The band's name derived from members recalling another employee at the pressing plant stating he had to fix the eddy current suppression ring - a copper ring around a transformer which subdues eddy currents.

The band's sound is said to have been influenced by bands such as The Troggs, The Standells, and The Pagans. Reference has also been made to the band's Australian delivery, both vocally and musically.

Their first year of performing saw them attract a loyal fanbase at venues Pony, Town Hall Hotel, The Espy and Streetparty nights held at One Six One and the Stage. Their first major performance came when they were booked to open the Meredith Music Festival in 2005.

In 2006, Eddy Current Suppression Ring released their first full-length recording, an eponymous album released to critical acclaim

In May 2008, the band released its second CD, Primary Colours. Within three weeks it had sold more than 2,000 copies, already more than their debut album and was sitting at number 6 on the ARIA charts. In September 2008, Primary Colours was nominated in the Best Rock Album category for the 2008 ARIA Awards. In October, it was nominated for the J-Award, as a candidate for the Triple J Australian album of the year. In November 2008, Primary Colours was named Best Independent Hard Rock/Punk Release at the Jägermeister Australian Independent Record (AIR) Awards held at Melbourne's Corner Hotel. In March 2009, the band won the $30,000 Australian Music Prize for Primary Colours. In October 2010, Rush to Relax (2010) was listed in the top 50 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums.Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{reflist}} template (see the help page).
