Filligar is an American rock quartet from Chicago, Illinois. The band was formed in 2000 by brothers Johnny, Teddy and Pete Mathias and their childhood friend Casey Gibson. The lineup has always remained the same. Filligar has written and recorded eight albums and over 80 original songs. The first two albums were recorded in a Chicago basement under the name Flipside, while the quartet was still in their early teens. They invented the name Filligar (based on the Mathias brothers' sister's childhood pet) and have since produced five albums recorded at Gravity Studios and Electrical Audio in Chicago.
Filligar's music has been inspired by a wide variety of artists and styles. The band lists their influences as Wilco, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Band, Radiohead, and Pink Floyd. They have played with artists such as The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, The Cool Kids, B.o.B, Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights, and Otis Day and the Knights.The popular RSL blog named Filligar as one of the '8 Best Live Acts in America' in 2011.
Their album Near or Far (2008) reached the College Music Journal (CMJ) Top 200 in March 2009. The Chicago Reader deemed them 'College-rock revivalists'. Their most recent release, "The Nerve" (2010), has garnered favorable reviews from press across the country, earning them comparisons to a young Rolling Stones, The Doors, and the Black Keys.
Filligar has received national media attention from newspapers such as The Chicago Tribune and The Chicago Sun-Times as well as top music blogs such as I Guess I'm Floating. They have had tracks featured on MTV's The Real World, College Life, 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, Life of Ryan, and Buzzin'. Filligar's 'The Things Outside' was used as the opening song for the 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surf.
