All Music Guide:

Free Kitten began in 1992 in New York as a vehicle that would allow Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Pussy Galore's Julia Cafritz to pursue other projects away from their usual work with their respective bands. Guitarist Cafritz and bassist Gordon began playing out, offering their audiences short sets of post-punk numbers. They put out Call Now/Straight Up later that year, and proceeded on the Lollapalooza tour. Their singles include "Oh Bondage, Up Yours," which was originally done by X-Ray Spex. Yoshimi, of the Boredoms, joined the group in 1993, contributing harmonica, trumpet, and drums, as well as occasional vocals. Bass player Mark Ibold, of Pavement, came aboard the following year. Free Kitten's debut album, Nice Ass, was released in 1995 and followed by Sentimental Education in 1997, the same year that Gordon launched her own clothing line, X-Girl. The bassist would embark on a number of projects in the late '90s and into the 2000s, including a solo album, a modeling gig with Calvin Klein, and art exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Meanwhile, Cafritz opted to take time away from music; it was rumored that she had married, started a family, and become a teacher. Nearly 11 years later, Gordon and Cafritz reunited for a new album, Inherit.

Wikipedia:

Free Kitten is a supergroup between Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Pussy Galore's Julie Cafritz. Originally performing under the name Kitten, they changed their name, after receiving threats of legal action by a heavy metal singer performing under that name. Boredoms member Yoshimi P-We eventually took up the task of drumming, and Pavement's Mark Ibold joined later on as bassist. They have released a handful of albums and singles, mainly on Kill Rock Stars, including a remix 12" featuring DJ Spooky. They toured on 1993's Lollapalooza. A studio album, Inherit, on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, is available.

Who Are…Stillsuit

By Tobi Vail, eMusic Contributor

Oakland's Stillsuit mix experimental noise rock with punk politics, creating a feminist soundtrack to the confusion of sex and violence in a gendered world. Loud treble guitars in weird tunings duel while drums pound away in another time signature. Their live show lays waste to squares who cover their ears, clear the room and even pull the plug. Stillsuit is the best band in America, and their legitimacy is not predicated on outside approval. Like… more »

In Praise of Moms Who Rock

By Tobi Vail, eMusic Contributor

I grew up with a rock 'n' roll mama. Even though my dad was the one who played in bands, it was my mom who saw the Beatles (twice!) and the Rolling Stones and Miles Davis, and it was my mom who woke us up in the middle of the night to teach us how to pogo after going to see the Specials in 1981. And so I've always had a special admiration for women… more »
