Biography All Music Guide

Group Members: Mary Timony Band, Mary Timony

All Music Guide:

Helium is essentially the project of Mary Timony, formerly of the girl punk band Autoclave. Helium formed in 1992 with Brian Dunton on bass and Shawn King Devlin and started releasing 7"s like 1993's The American Jean. 1994 saw the band release the Pirate Prude EP, an interesting but somewhat inaccessible exercise in mixing radical feminism with punk rock. The Dirt of Luck, released in 1995, was an improvement and embellishment of the sound laid forth in Pirate Prude: Heavy, sluggish guitars, spooky keyboards, and Timony's breathy alto laid over an understated rhythm section. That year, Polvo's Ash Bowie also joined the lineup, replacing Dunton on bass. In 1997, the group returned with the No Guitars EP. Helium is a challenging listen but also a rewarding one.

Who Are…Broken Water

By Tobi Vail, Contributor

A few years ago, Olympia had a vibrant punk scene full of talented young bands and, while I was excited by the energy of a new era (Gun Outfit, Milk Music, HPP) and liked some of the music quite a bit (White Boss, Sex Vid, Son Skull), I wasn't into how male-dominated and retro it all felt. Not only did it evoke the sound of '80s hardcore and art-rock it also brought back the trend… more »

Who Are…Speedy Ortiz

By Annie Zaleski, Contributor

Speedy Ortiz began as the solo project of New York native (and ex-Quilty vocalist/guitarist) Sadie Dupuis. But by early 2012, the songwriter — who's also working toward an MFA in poetry at UMass-Amherst and teaching expository writing — had enlisted several of her New England musician pals, including drummer Mike Falcone (whose band Ovlov frequently played with Quilty), bassist Darl Ferm (who had gotten to know both Dupuis and Falcone from booking their bands at… more »

Who Is…Chelsea Wolfe

By Stacey Anderson, Contributor

Chelsea Wolfe's morbid folk-metal records are like a one-woman rebuttal to the Los Angeles department of tourism: They capture her hometown in a surreal, sinister light of aggression and decay. But don't get her wrong — the California native loves her locale. "It's an inspiring place — a good place to get things done, a very forward-moving place," explains the young singer-songwriter. "The lighting here is really bright, but it's the kind of brightness where… more »
