J-Kwon's path to fame included mooning Arista head L.A. Reid and mocking producer Jermaine Dupri. These events helped gain the MC a contract with the latter's So So Def, a subsidiary of the former's employer. However, his life was far more turbulent before that; kicked out his mother's house at the age of 12, he took to the street, dealt crack cocaine, and had his jaw broken after defeating a fellow MC in battle. His label deal helped turn that around. Before turning 18, his debut single, "Tipsy," had reached the Top Ten of just about every singles chart. Overseen by Dupri and produced almost in full by the Track Boyz, J-Kwon's full-length debut -- Hood Hop, released in March of 2004 -- appeared just as the hit was becoming unavoidable, and it went platinum. He was mostly quiet during the next few years, though he appeared on Bow Wow's single "Fresh Azimiz" (a Top 20 R&B/Hip-Hop hit), and returned in early 2009 with Hood Hop 2, an independently released album made available as a digital download. Hood Hop 2.5, released a few months later, was made available in physical form. In 2010, he issued a self-titled album, another independent disc.

Biography[edit]

At age 12, Jones was expelled from school for allegedly dealing illegal drugs. He often slept at friends' homes and in cars; and after winning one rap battle, suffered a broken jaw. J-Kwon first rose to stardom with the first single "Tipsy" from his 2004 album Hood Hop, which peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200. The song peaked at number two in his native United States, number four in the United Kingdom and number five in Australia. Other singles included "You & Me" with Sadiyyah and "Hood Hop."

For the 2005 film XXX: State of the Union, J-Kwon performed the single "Get XXX'd" with Petey Pablo and Ebony Eyez. J-Kwon began working on the follow-up to Hood Hop, Louisville Slugger, that year also. He collaborated with comedian Andy Milonakis in "Like Dis", to promote The Andy Milonakis Show, and appeared on Bow Wow's single "Fresh Azimiz".In 2008, he released a single "Boo Boo" through his own label Hood Hop Music with album Hood Hop 2 following the next year exclusively for digital download. Follow-up Hood Hop 2.5 was released on CD on July 28, 2009. Its first official single was "Louie Bounce (I Smacked Nikki)".

In March 2010, J-Kwon's record label, Gracie Entertainment, said that he had been missing since early February 2010. Later the same month, MTV News reported that he had been in touch with the record label, confirming that he was alive and well. He was later quoted as saying he was "just taking some time out." J-Kwon released his fourth studio album on March 23, 2010, entitled J-Kwon.
