All Music Guide:

Norwegian black metal band Kampfar began life as a solo project for ex-Mock frontman Dolk in the summer of 1995. Their demo tape was issued by the French Season of Mist label that year, and the group signed with the German label Malicious for the 1997 album Mellom Skogkledde Aaser. Friction between Dolk and the label resulted in a move to Hammerheart, for whom Kampfar recorded the EP Norse in 1998. Fra Underverdenen appeared a year later.

Wikipedia:

Kampfar is a black metal band from Fredrikstad, Norway. According to their singer, Dolk, their name is an ancient Norse battle cry which means Odin or Wotan.

History

Kampfar was formed by Dolk in 1994 when he left his former band, Mock, and was joined by Thomas. Following the release of Fra Underverdenen, Kampfar became inactive, and it was not until Dolk joined the band Gruesome and met the bass player Jon that Kampfar became active again. Jon soon became a permanent member of the band and the threesome began rehearsing. Drummer II13 joined the band in middle of 2003, after which the band began to compose new material and finally played live. The band made their first appearance at the Moshfest festival in Halden, not far from their hometown Fredrikstad. Their 2006 album Kvass was recorded between November 2005 and January 2006, with producer Rune Jørgensen, in Silvertone Studio in Gamle Fredrikstad.

The music of Kampfar is inspired by norse mythology, folklore, and nature. The band are currently signed to Napalm Records.
