All Music Guide:

A Canadian dream pop duo with a lo-fi style, Memoryhouse hail from Guelph, Ontario. The duo was founded in 2009 by photographer Denise Nouvion (vocals) and classical composer Evan Abeele (production). They named themselves after classical composer Max Richter's 2001 album of the same name and cite influences that include My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500, and Cocteau Twins. Memoryhouse made their recording debut in 2009 with "To the Lighthouse." In 2010 the duo released The Years, a four-track EP on the Arcade Sound label, and Lately, a single for which a promotional video was filmed. The single was re-released in 2011 by Sub Pop, which also released the duo's full-length debut, The Slideshow Effect, in 2012.

Reception [edit]

In reviewing the 2010 release of The Years, Pitchfork wrote that "the EP clearly sets Abeele and Nouvion apart from their more amateur peers. The Years may be awash in nostalgia, but far from inviting unfavorable comparisons, it mostly confirms that the past was indeed as good as you remember."

As laptops have replaced boomboxes, the aesthetic has endured, with bands embracing digital fuzz as a signal of both outsider cool and a thin wallet. But with the late-2000s lo-fi boom that launched… more »

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

Man. There are just so many new records today. Also, I think about halfway through this, I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. Trust, TRST: Behind the year's worst album cover is one of the year's best records. Super goth, in all the right ways. Where my Apoptygma Berzerk fans at? Home crying? Cool. See you there. This one is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Barry Walters goes: Trust is danceable even if you're not stuck in a K-hole. Its tempos vary… more »
