All Music Guide:

Formed as an underground collective that represented a collaboration between Toronto hip-hop crews Lyrical Coalition and The Horde, Monolith was born in 1994 with a line-up that averages over 15 members. However, with each member busy with their own solo projects and production deals, Monolith's first official release The Long Awaited EP wouldn't hit the streets until 1998, thanks to their own One Rock Records. The follow-up single "Bye D'Plenty"/"At The T.O.P." single came out that same year without any assistance from the music industry suits.

Wikipedia:

Monolithos fortress on Rhodes

A monolith is a geological feature such as a mountain, consisting of a single massive stone or rock, or a single piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument. Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are most often made of very hard and solid metamorphic or igneous rock.

The word derives from the Latin word monolithus from the Greek word μονόλιθος (monolithos), derived from μόνος ("one" or "single") and λίθος ("stone").
