All Music Guide:

Formed in 2006, New Jersey’s Screaming Females combine scorching guitars with a firmly D.I.Y. approach to create their own brand of indie rock. Mixing equal parts Dinosaur Jr. and Sleater-Kinney, the Brunswick trio of Marissa Paternoster (guitar/vocals), Mike Rickenbacker (bass), and Jarrett Dougherty (drums) strives to embody the spirit of indie rock in its purest form; Screaming Females book their own shows and release their own records to bring their guitar-driven rock to the people. In 2007 the band fired its opening shot, self-releasing its debut full-length, Baby Teeth, as well as the Arm Over Arm/Zoo of Death 7”. The band quickly followed up with its sophomore album, What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.?, which was self-released and later reissued by Don Giovanni Records. The band focused on collaborative releases in 2008, including a split 7” with Full of Fancy on Let’s Pretend Records and another split 7”, this one consisting of Neil Young covers, with Hunchback. The Females got some more exposure in 2009 after a series of jaw-dropping performances at New York’s CMJ and a tour with Dead Weather. That same year, the band made the jump to a label, releasing Power Move through Don Giovanni. In 2010, Screaming Females released their fourth album, Castle Talk, before getting more mainstream attention after they were featured on NPR's All Things Considered later that year. The band followed up with its fifth album, Ugly, in 2012.

Wikipedia:

Screaming Females is an American independent rock band, often labeled as a punk rock band, from New Brunswick, New Jersey. They have released five full length albums. The band features Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and King Mike on bass.

History[edit]

Mike and Marissa formed a band in high school under the name Surgery On TV. After several lineup changes they finally decided on the trio and a name change to Screaming Females. The Screaming Females got their start in the basement show scene of New Brunswick, NJ . Shows are held in the houses of various bands, students, and residents, so people under 21 can attend. The band has gone on to achieve success with a wider exposure, having been featured on NPR, Last Call with Carson Daly, and MTV. The Screaming Females have played with bands such as Garbage, Throwing Muses, Dinosaur Jr., The Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, JEFF the Brotherhood, Little Lungs, Cheeky, The Ergs, Shellshag, The Measure.

Ugly[edit]

With their fifth studio album Ugly the Screaming Females collaborated with noted audio engineer Steve Albini. The album received across the board favorable reviews from media outlets, such as, The A.V. Club, Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, Pitchfork Media, Alternative Press, CMJ, and others.

Chalk Tape[edit]

In February 2013, Screaming Females released the self produced EP Chalk Tape for streaming online. The EP was also sold as a limited run cassette tape as well as in a digital download format. According to the band's website Chalk Tape is a departure from their typical songwriting process. In writing Chalk Tape the band laid out their plans on a chalk board beforehand and then recorded the songs with no rewrites.

In September of 2013 the band will go out on tour with label mates Waxahatchee and Tenement. In addition, they have announced plans to release a new album in 2014.Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{reflist}} template (see the help page).
