All Music Guide:
Slim Cessna's Auto Club play country gospel with a fervor that seems to emanate from a punk pulpit. The group's leader, Slim Cessna, a tall, lanky gentleman with a gold tooth and large white hat, sings in a high-lonesome voice and yodel, and "preaches" with conviction. (Sample sentiment from "Last Song About Satan": "So I said, Lucifer you piece of sh*t/I should kick your ass right where you sit.../My mother cries because of you.") The group released its self-titled debut in 1995; the album was tweaked and reissued in September 2001. By the time of 2000's Always Say Please and Thank You (released on the Jello Biafra punk label Alternative Tentacles), Auto Club's lineup included Danny Pants, Reverend Dwight Pentacost, Jay Munly (who has released records as Munly De Har He), John Rumley (who builds instruments at the Denver Folklore Center), and Ordy Garrison. Despite the fact that Cessna moved to his wife's home state of Rhode Island and Pentacost took up residence in Chicago, the band remained Denver-based, performing there regularly. In 2004 the group released The Bloudy Tenant Truth Peace, followed by 2005's Jesus Let Me Down (which came out on Smooch Records) and Cipher (back on Alternative Tentacles) in 2008. A collection of eight rarities and outtakes by the group titled Buried Behind the Barn was released in 2010. Unentitled was scheduled for a 2011 release.
Wikipedia:
Slim Cessna's Auto Club is an American alt.country/gothabilly rock band, originally formed in 1992 in Denver, Colorado. The constant in the band has been Slim Cessna, formerly a member of The Denver Gentlemen along with David Eugene Edwards and Jeffery-Paul of 16 Horsepower.[1] Jay Munly (often credited as "Munly Munly") is also a key member of the current lineup of the band. In addition to contributing songwriting, vocals, and banjo, he also serves as a sidekick to Cessna on stage.
Their music includes elements of country blues, Southern gospel, gothabilly and other forms loosely grouped as Americana or alternative country. The Auto Club is sometimes labeled "country Gothic" due to the juxtaposition of apocalyptic religious imagery with stories of alcohol, violence, and relationships gone awry.
The other current members are Lord Dwight Pentacost, Daniel Grandbois (Danny Pants)[2], Robert Ferbrache, and Todd Moore. Former members of note are John Rumley (who also crafted many of the stringed instruments used), Ordy Garrison, Jon Killough (who also did the artwork for the 2005 live CD Jesus Let Me Down and "Buried Behind the Barn"), Shane Trost, Whiff (Steve) Cessna, Caleb Roberts, Frank Hauser Jr., Gregory Garcia Jr., Judith Ann Winters, Tim Maher, Reverend Glasseye, and Chad Johnson.
In March 2008, the band released their fourth studio album, titled Cipher, on Alternative Tentacles Records. Cipher was recorded and produced by Robert Ferbrache in Westminster, Colorado.[3]
Slim Cessna's Auto Club released their fifth studio album, Unentitled, in March 2011.
