All Music Guide:

Spyglass is a five-piece outfit originating from the Seattle underground music scene. The dark, lounge-like, almost gothic vocals of Barbara Trentalange are backed by the rock-solid rhythm moves of Barry Shaw (drums) and Clay Martin (bass). Twin guitars via David Einmo and John Roth are for the most part used as textural devices. With a string of effect pedals measuring six feet in length each, this guitar team churns out floating and ethereal minor-key tones. Trentalange's keyboards fill out the sound. Spyglass use this instrumentation to generate a slow, layered, moody-pop sound.

Formed in 1998, the band received local recognition with their 1999 EP, Torch. In 2000, the group released their first full-length entitled Wake Up Sleepyhead on Pattern 25 Records (Jon Auer, Sushi Robo, Sanford Arms). The record was well-received by local critics and hit number 11 on the CMJ college radio adds chart. After a string of shows throughout the summer of 2000 the group holed up to work on their second LP. Strategies for the Stranded was released on Pattern 25 Records in August of 2001.
