Sybreed (a portmanteau of "synthetic breed") is an industrial metal/Melodic Death Metal band from Geneva, Switzerland.
History
Sybreed was formed in 2003 by vocalist Benjamin and guitarist Drop, after they previously worked together in a band called Rain. In 2004, Sybreed released their debut album, Slave Design. Most of the tour to support the album was conducted in Europe, with some dates scheduled in the United States.
In early 2006, drummer Alex left the band due to creative and personal issues. During a brief hiatus, Dirk Verbeuren of Soilwork and Scarve agreed to do session drums while Sybreed recorded their next album. After production was completed, Kevin Choiral was confirmed as the band's new permanent drummer. On July 7, 2007, it was announced that the band had signed a deal with Listenable Records for a European release of their new album Antares in October of that year. The album was released much later in the United States, on August 15, 2008, but included a bonus track, "Plasmaterial".
On June 29, 2009, Sybreed's official website announced that the band and their bassist, Burn, would part company. Although it was originally stated on the website that Burn would still participate in their US tour beginning on July 17, 2009, he did not make the trip to the US and instead they enlisted bass player Hector Gonzalez of Los Angeles, California, thrash band Flatline as a temporary bassist to complete the United States tour. At the completion of the tour, in an update on their website dated August 31, 2009, Sybreed confirmed Stephane Grand as being their new permanent bass player.
The band released their third studio album The Pulse of Awakening in Europe on November 16, 2009.
On April 7, 2010, Sybreed's song "Doomsday Party" was released as a downloadable track for Rock Band (video game).
It was announced on October 9th on the official website that the band would embark on their first ever Australian tour with main support act Anno Domini.
On December 12, 2011, Sybreed started recording their fourth album God is an Automaton with the mixing scheduled for April 2012 in Los Angeles with Rhys Fulber.
Music
Sybreed's musical style is dubbed "death wave", which is a portmanteau of death metal and new wave. This is described as a mix of various components and influences of extreme metal and progressive metal that incorporates melodies and groove-based rhythms synthesised with electronic music elements. The band also utilizes complex time signatures, polyrhythmic composition, blast beats, sampling, and keyboard effects. Their vocal work makes use of distorted clean vocals, death growling, and high-pitched screams.
Sybreed define their musical influences as Fear Factory, Meshuggah, Samael, and European synthrock such as Depeche Mode.
