Biography All Music Guide

All Music Guide:

Sexy Kids bandmates Roxanne Clifford and Patrick Doyle teamed up with James Hoare of Your Twenties (whom they met, in true indie pop fashion, at a Comet Gain show) and their friend Marion Herbain to form Veronica Falls in 2009. Similar to Sexy Kids, Veronica Falls' pop-oriented, reverb-kissed tunes were rooted in mid-'80s influences like the Shop Assistants and the Chills but also found them in line with noisy, poppy contemporaries like Grass Widow and Vivian Girls. Their first two singles ("Found Love in a Graveyard" and "Beachy Head") were released in 2010 by Captured Tracks and garnered plenty of positive reviews. Their first album was recorded with Guy Fixsen (who worked with My Bloody Valentine and Moose in the '80s), and Ash Workman (who worked with 2010s groups like Metronomy and Summer Camp), the end result sounding like a perfect blend of the eras. Preceded by the single "Bad Feeling" in August of 2011, Veronica Falls was released in September of that same year on Slumberland in the U.S. and Bella Union in the E.U. After touring the world for most of the year, the band returned to the airwaves in November of 2012 with a new single "Teenage." They followed it up in early 2012 with the release of the Rory Attwell (Male Bonding, the Vaccines) co-produced album Waiting for Something to Happen.

Who Are…Joanna Gruesome

By Annie Zaleski, Contributor

Some bands meet in record shops and some meet through Craigslist ads, but Owen Williams bonded with his future Joanna Gruesome band mates at a rather unusual place: an anger management group. "If you just piss off a lot of teachers you get into those kinds of groups," he explains. "A lot of the time they kind of draft you in through school." After initially forming late 2010, Joanna Gruesome cycled through a series of different… more »

Who Are…Golden Grrrls

By Tobi Vail, Contributor

I interviewed Golden Grrrls before their show with Brilliant Colors in Olympia; they had just flown from London to Seattle to start their first U.S. tour. We ordered pizza and sat on the floor of Bikini Kill Records HQ to get to know one other. I quickly discovered they're record nerds who prefer nothing more than to geek out about music: Drummer/vocalist Eilidh Rodgers works in a record store owned by Stephen Pastel where my… more »

Veronica Falls’ Favorite Sophomore Albums

By Michael Tedder, Contributor

One listen to Veronica Falls' sophomore album Waiting For Something To Happen and it's clear that the band knows both their reference points — Johnny Marr jangle, Lush reverb — and what to do with them. Like any indie-pop group worth their rare colored vinyl, Veronica Falls are as much a coalition of amateur underground rock academics as they are a music-making entity. We decided to celebrate the release of Waiting by asking them to… more »
