Directed by composer Chen Da-Wei, the Film Orchestra Of Shanghai has explored a wide range of Chinese music including Taoist music, orchestral music and healing music. Their 1991 album, The Sound Of A Bell Emitted In The Evening From An Ancient Temple is a leading example of Sanskrit music, while, their six volume series of Therapeutic recordings is one of the most ambitious samplings of the internal medicine studies from the first to third centuries. In 1984, the group's recording, The Great River Flows To The East, placed third in a national music competition. Members of the Film Orchestra Of Shanghai have also performed and recorded as the Film Symphony Orchestra and the Shanghai Chinese Traditional Orchestra.
