All Music Guide:

Jack Tatum, formerly of Jack and the Whale and Facepaint, began making his shimmery, synth-washed indie pop recordings under the name Wild Nothing in the summer of 2009. Emerging at a time when a handful of C-86-esque groups (e.g. Crystal Stilts, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart) were in vogue, Tatum's project garnered a bit of buzz with a synthy, glimmering cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." Captured Tracks picked up Wild Nothing soon after the project's first demos came out, and it wasn't long before Tatum recruited bassist Jeff Haley, guitarist Nathan Goodman, and drummer Max Brooks to round out the group's live sound. Wild Nothing's first single, Summer Holiday, was released on Captured Tracks before 2009 came to a close. The band's debut full-length, Gemini, was released in the spring of 2010 and garnered Wild Nothing all kinds of critical acclaim. After releasing a follow-up EP, Golden Haze, near the end of 2010, Captured Tracks reissued Gemini in February of 2011 with the addition of Tatum's cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." For his next record, Tatum worked with producer Nicolas Vernhes at his Rare Book Room Studios. The result was 2012's album Nocturne.

History [edit]

Jack Tatum previously played in bands Jack and the Whale, and FACEPAINT in the college town of Blacksburg, VA. He began recording under the name Wild Nothing in the summer of 2009. Emerging at a time when a handful of C86-esque groups were in vogue, Tatum's demos garnered attention around indie music circles with a cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." Tatum signed with Captured Tracks record label after the success of these demos and began touring with bassist Jeff Haley, guitarist Nathan Goodman, and drummer Max Brooks.

Wild Nothing's first single, "Summer Holiday," was released on Captured Tracks in 2009, followed by "Cloudbusting." The band's debut full-length, Gemini, was released in the spring of the 2010. Gemini was ranked 49th best album of 2010 by Pitchfork Media and 36th best album of 2010 by Amazon.com Music Editors. Blogcritics wrote, "While I wasn't totally convinced with Gemini as a whole, I adored it in chunks".

A follow-up EP entitled Golden Haze was released in October 2010.

On April 23, 2013, Wild Nothing announced their next EP, Empty Estate, to be released on May 14, 2013.

Interview: Wild Nothing

By Annie Zaleski, eMusic Contributor

Jack Tatum surmises that people might refer to the music he makes under the moniker Wild Nothing as "reference-pop" or "revisionist-pop." Those phrases give short shrift to the scope of his music, though: Both 2010's Gemini and the new Nocturne take cues from the past — the Cure's gloomy fog, '80s UK indie rock, whispery twee, Sarah Records' melancholy jangle — but don't use nostalgia as an emotional crutch. Nocturne is much dreamier than past Wild… more »

Who Are…DIIV

By Laura Studarus, eMusic Contributor

Clad in an oversized knit sweater, his bleach-blond hair pointing at a half-dozen different angles, DIIV frontman Z. Cole Smith prefaces our chat with a disclaimer: He never expected the band to go anywhere. And yet, on the cusp of releasing their debut Oshin, DIIV (changed from DIVE out of respect for the 1990s Belgian industrial band of the same name) has already surpassed Smith's modest expectations —which didn't extend far past hanging out with… more »

Label Profile: Captured Tracks

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

File Under: Ragged, guitar-based indie pop; jangle-'n'-reverb forever! Flagship Acts: Beach Fossils, Wild Nothing, the Fresh & Onlys, the Girls At Dawn Based In: Brooklyn, New York When I first meet Mike Sniper, he's drinking Patron Silver at an Oyster Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. From any other record executive, the scene would be typical to the point of almost seeming mundane. But Sniper is the founder of the tiny, ragged Brooklyn indie Captured Tracks, a label that prizes… more »
