Summary

The 15th-century explorer, navigator, pimp, and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci lived a full and somewhat eventful life, according to this biography by historian Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. His fame surely exceeds his accomplishments, however, as Fernandez-Armesto explains how another cartographer, the famous Mercator, attached Amerigo's name to the large region of the New World that became America. Along the way, Fernandez-Armesto provide a rich account of the world Vespucci lived in: one of science and exploration, money and trade, power and influence, and rapid change--all of which led to the rise of capitalism and the age of empire, and which is recognizable today as an early chapter of our own busy history.

Quotes from the Critics

"[Felipe Fernandez-Armesto] writes cogently and with insight about the world in which Vespucci lived, and about the effect that the discoveries in the West had upon it." - Literary Review

"Using the bare bones of what is known about Vespucci to expatiate on subjects as diverse as the brutal world of Renaissance Italy, the importance of trade winds to world history and the poetics of travel writing, Fernández-Armesto has written a provocative primer on how navigators like Columbus and Vespucci set loose the cultural storm that eventually created the world we live in today." - New York Times Book Review

"[An] iconoclastic, irreverent, but also superbly researched portrayal of a subject gifted at getting history to take him at his word." - New York Sun
