Summary

After Liz, a runaway slave in America before emancipation, is struck on the head she begins to have visions of the future of African-Americans, through civil rights and up into the modern era. James McBride's novel alternates between Liz's adventures as she heads north and her prophetic dreams. The result is a combination of an exciting adventure and a meditative consideration on the nature of freedom.

Quotes from the Critics

"McBride hasn't lost his touch: he nails the horrors of slavery as well as he does the power of hope and redemption." (starred review) - Publishers Weekly

"A radically new way of telling this old story, and it just might turn out to be balm for a wound that has so far stubbornly refused to heal." - New York Times Book Review
