Steve Hochman has been a music critic since he was 7 — when the Beatles came to America — but didn’t turn pro until he was 27. He covered pop music for the L.A. Times from 1985 to 2008 and has traveled around the world in pursuit of new sounds (conveniently writing the global music column Around the World — “So much music for such a little planet”) and serves as music critic for the KQED-produced radio show “The California Report.”
