When it comes to turning books into movies, Stephen King is a hall of famer. Among the living, he’s surely the got the best adaptation batting average. He fares well among the dead, too, especially if you consider the head starts Dickens and Shakespeare were working with.

A rough estimate: King’s written works have been stretched onto one screen or another more than 125 times. That’s counting TV mini-series, short films, both incarnations of Carrie and No Smoking, and the Bollywood interpretation of his short story “Quitter’s Inc.” Yep, Stephen King via Bollywood. I’ll wait while you put it in your queue.

And since his successes outside the bookstore (i.e. The Shining, Stand By Me, It, etc.) are so legendary, nearly his entire catalog has been optioned and adapted, sometimes with craptacular results (like Lawnmower Man, Thinner, Apt Pupil and Maximum Overdrive, for which King the writer can only blame King the director). In fact, putting together this whimsical little list proved somewhat difficult. His IMDB page thwarted me at every turn.

The Dead Zone? Dude, that was a movie and a TV series.

The short story “The General?” Sorry, that was part of the 1985 cinematic triptych Cat’s Eye.

How about that novella Riding the Bullet? Apparently that was a blip on the big screen in 2004, starring David Arquette and the chick who played the swim fan in Swimfan.

Still, like those intrepid langoliers in Langoliers, I pushed through and eventually came up with this list of five killer King books that, to the best of my knowledge, remain pristinely untainted by Hollywood (or Bollywood, for that matter).

On Writing is a strange literary chimera, a hybrid of bald-faced personal memoir and blunt, text-bookish lessons on proper composition. When he's not unspooling his rags-to-Redrum career path — the liquor, the novels, that time a van left him crumpled and bleeding in a ditch — King's pulling back the curtain on what he sees as the tricks to good writing (keep the first draft to yourself, read a lot, study the... psalms of Strunk and White). He's certainly figured out what works for him; several of his major works start with a very simple, very conscious formula: Mix two things. High school outcast + telekinesis = Carrie. Possessed car + frustrated loner = Christine. Huge family dog + superbad strain of rabies = Cujo. It's a little more complicated, but that's the germ of it. On Writing also lays bare the most telling (and occasionally frustrating) facet of King's creative process: He hardly ever maps things out. Once you know this, that the author is along for the ride almost as much as the reader, you finally understand why so many of his plots are unpredictable and his conclusions so often run counter to known literary, thematic and cinematic blueprints. Kind of a ridiculous thing to say about a guy with so many "based on the novel by…" credits, but it's true. His plots usually don't build to glorious and meaningful climaxes; they end when the story's been told. Read by King himself, On Writing is a thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking audiobook experience.

Can it be a movie?
Yeah, but I doubt it ever will. A story this personal and rooted in the real world, can only be done justice in an American Splendor sort of way, with the author playing himself. I see King stepping in and out of the main action to address the camera directly, and I see new stuff added, behind the scenes goings-on from the sets of Dreamcatcher, Pet Sematary, etc. Now, we've witnessed the man take on several bit parts on the big screen, and so far his acting proficiency ranks somewhere between Kevin Smith and Stan Lee. But he'd have to really have his heart in it to make this one work (and of course the title would have to go).

Worried that his name was a bigger seller than his storytelling, and frustrated because his publisher had him on a silly one-book-a-year regimen, Stephen King concocted the Richard Bachman nom de plume and started cranking out paperback originals. From the beginning — 1977's sickly prescient school-shooting novel Rage, which King has since lobbied to keep out of print — it was obvious Bachman was a different kind of horror author. "Dark-toned, despairing... even when he is laughing (despairing most when he's laughing, in fact), Richard Bachman isn't a fellow I'd want to be all the time," King writes in the intro to the audiobook version of 1979's The Long Walk. No kidding. This novel — about a government-sponsored contest that has 100 young men walking across the U.S. until 99 of them drop dead — is decidedly ambiguous in its morals, and contains no reassurances for readers that it's set in a just and sense-making world. It's way more Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" than The Running Man (Bachman's 1982 gameshow-gone-nuts yarn that seems to foretell the rubbernecking reality TV era). The Long Walk is brilliant in its simplicity, introducing us to characters, some likeable, some not, and then running each of them into the ground regardless of how we feel about them.

Can it be a movie?
Well, sure. Not a blockbuster, mind you. Just a bleak indie psycho-thriller content with keeping its audience wonderfully bummed out (on par with the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, let's say). And it's possible The Long Walk will trudge onto the big screen one day; director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, The Walking Dead) bought the rights back in 2007 and said he envisioned something low budget, with "a ragged and loose and documentary kind of feel." Sadly, that's the last we've heard about it.

Don't get me wrong — Cell runs with blood and is littered with corpses, and definitely belongs in the horror section — but it's also the closest Stephen King has ever come to straight-up science fiction. Almost cyberpunk, except not at all, really. The cock-eyed apocalypse adventure starts with most everybody getting a cell phone call that uploads a new operating system into their brains. First it turns them into animalistic psychos;... later they're more like douchey worker bees controlled by some unseen evil force. The lucky few who missed the call are hunted and converted and/or killed. So basically, it's like the Windows ME launch all over again.
Can it be a movie?
Oh, hell yeah. And now's a good time, too. While these baddies aren't straight-up zombies, they're probably close enough to cash in on modern pop culture's undying affinity for the undead. So let's do this — a mid-budget B-movie. Put out a call for blank-eyed extras! Summon a halfway decent CGI crew! Order 100 barrels of Karo syrup and red food coloring!

For such a hefty novel — the audiobook is (and don't be discouraged) 30 hours long — 11/23/63 is actually pretty straightforward. Present-day English teacher Jake Epping goes back to 1958 (via wormhole, or some such thing) and sets about thwarting the assassination of JFK. It sounds easy, but Jake quickly learns that "the past is obdurate" (English teachers. Am I right, people?), which basically means that history doesn't want to be... rewritten. All manner of setbacks and obstacles (a stomach virus, a car crash, a steady girlfriend) pop up to sidetrack Jake from his appointment with destiny. And even though he briefly finds himself in the godforsaken town of Derry, Maine (the cursed setting for It, if you recall), 11/23/63 is pretty much a non-supernatural, barely sci-fi edge-of-your seat thriller.

Can it be a movie?
Can it be stopped? The word is that director Jonathan Demme (director of Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Beloved) was going to turn 11/23/63 into a movie, to which I say: It's not too late to walk away, JD. Sure, there's romance and time travel, and Lee Harvey Oswald would get some juicy screen time, but the book is actually pretty subtle for a historical suspense yarn. Jake has no confidants in his quest, so all his plotting is done via internal monologue. And all those times where the obdurate past throws up roadblocks? Yeah, at best it'll look like Final Destination. At worst, it'll resemble plain old bad luck. If you are reading this in the future, and you are Jonathan Demme, and you've already made this book into an awesome movie, good on you. Sorry I was/am so pessimistic about the possibilities. If I could go back and change it, I would. Except I could have, but I didn't, so I guess I stand by it. The reviewer is obdurate.

Whoops. Stephen King accidentally wrote a resilient, hopeful, feel-good story that leaves us thinking the world's not so awful after all. But it's not his fault. Following the Boston Red Sox during the 2004 season should have been an exercise in self-flagellation, a diary of the damned for Beantown boosters King and co-author Stewart O'Nan. The franchise had spent almost a century as Major League Baseball's most loveable sadsack franchise, a team... of cursed, bad luck losers who could only be counted on to come up short when it mattered most. Then, under the daily scrutiny of our narrating diehards, the Sox somehow went and won it all in dramatic fashion — defeating the evil empire (aka the Yankees) in the greatest comeback in the history of the game along the way. But, you know, that's okay. Seeing these longtime foul-weather fanboys finally find joy is a singularly infectious experience. Congrats, dudes.

Can it be a movie?
For old-school fans of the game — the ones who believe in pre-Moneyball hokum like "heart" and "guts" and "clutch" — this is a guaranteed winner. But it would probably come up short at the box office. Pardon the expression, but Faithful is way too inside-baseball for a mass audience. There's plenty of drama, sure, but lots more stats and lingo and Google-requiring names from bygone days. Plus, it's essentially a book-length conversation between two guys. If Richard Linklater or Wallace Shawn want to give it a shot, cool. Otherwise, Hollywood should steer clear. You listening, Demme?

You’re really gonna fix yourself up this time around. You’ll fit into the jeans you wore in college, floss daily, meditate, work harder but stress less, go green, learn a new language. But somehow, no sooner do you set these lofty goals then, well, inertia kicks in. You get overwhelmed by the enormity of making big changes, which in turn causes your motivation to slip away, leaving you with a lapsed gym membership, abandoned pieces of Nicorette, and a whole lotta TV.

Let’s face it – it’ll probably require more than a few books for you to break free of your bad habits. So instead of getting hung up on extravagant resolutions, why not take a few baby steps? Dramatic transformations may be way too ambitious to be practical, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make some tweaks here and there. The six books below offer a little bit of inspiration in your quest to become a slightly healthier, happier, more attractive version of your regular old self. Good luck and Happy New Year!

Clearly it's time to change your eating habits, but according to Veuve Cliquot CEO Mireille Giuliano, there's absolutely no need to go cold turkey on wine and cheese and chocolate mousse. If you’re looking for a low-cost and non-violent way to combine the two, here is a bookshelf for the armchair detective. The cases range from Asia to Africa to Great Britain (that spiritual home of literary sleuths), up north to Sweden (but not checking in with any Girls with Dragon Tattoos), and finally to the Deep South of the good old U.S. of A.
McCall Smith's novels have become something of a cottage industry (there are 10 available on eMusic), complete with an HBO show starring Jill Scott as Precious Ramotswe, the series' crime-busting heroine.

The works of Shakespeare contain more than 700 puns on sex and more than 400 on genitals. But, sadly, most of these have been kept under wraps for centuries, depriving the world of some of the sharpest, most sophisticated and hilarious jokes in the whole of literature. Shakespeare’s sexual wordplay ranges from uproarious innuendoes to profoundly moving expressions of emotional pain. His kings, queens and aristocrats are as foul-mouthed as his clowns, and his women are expert dealers in the raciest double-entendres.

Why so many sexual puns? Shakespeare lived in a world that was vulgar and brutal by our standards, and people across the social spectrum spoke in a language that was full of colourful, bawdy and often blatantly filthy speech. His first patron, the Lord Chamberlain, was Queen Elizabeth I’s cousin, known for his ‘custom of swearing’and ‘obscenity in speaking’(as well as for fathering several illegitimate children and growing rich from the brothels up the road from Shakespeare’s theatre!) Shakespeare’s second patron was the King himself, Elizabeth’s successor James I, who was known as ‘the foul-mouthed King’.

Shakespeare’s theatre, the Globe, was located at the heart of London’s most notorious red-light district, Bankside (not far from where the reconstructed Globe stands today), and his plays abound with brothels. His most famous prostitute is Mistress Quickly — her name itself an obscene pun on Quick-lay.

Shakespeare’s astonishing genius lies in his supreme understanding of the human condition, and one of his favourite devices for getting his audience to explore the funny as well as the serious side of life was to play to its love of decoding meanings by making his tantalising subtext sizzle. Here’s a taste — but be warned: “down-and-dirty” doesn’t come near it!

Dr Pauline Kiernan is a Shakespeare scholar and screenwriter. Her books include Filthy Shakespeare: Shakespeare’s Most Outrageous Sexual Puns, which contains more than 70 examples of sexual puns in Shakespeare, and Shakespeare’s Theory of Drama. She has held fellowships and lectureships at the Universities of Oxford and Reading, and was Leverhulme Research Fellow at Shakespeare’s Globe in its first years.

Someone (no one can quite agree who) once said that talking about music is like dancing about architecture, but there’s a whole shelf of books ready to prove them wrong. It may require some serious linguistic contortions to describe the sense of release that accompanies the resolution of a chord progression, or that strange change from major to minor, but the way it transforms our lives and our world is well within the grasp of sharply written prose.

From musical memoirs to overarching histories to a study of the way music works on the brain, these books deepen our understanding of an art form that cuts straight to the heart. They suggest new ways of listening to old songs and plenty of avenues for discovery. For the most part, you’ll have to provide your own soundtrack, but the vivid writing and poignant stories ensure that you’ll have plenty of tunes coursing through your head before long.

Record producer and session musician turned neuropsychologist Daniel Levitin creates a provocative taxonomy of vocal music that sorts songs into six categories: friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, religion and love. Mixing neurology and evolutionary theory with interviews with such musical pals as Sting and Rodney Crowell, Levitin intertwines science, history and criticism, attempting a master theory of the function music has played in the advancement of human civilization, and in keeping us alive... and sane on a day-to-day basis. Work songs, like those sung on American chain gangs, promote community and bolster tired spirits; religious songs passed on the traditions of faith long before the advent of written language.
The high priest of Gen-X navel gazing, Chuck Klosterman proudly elevates his personal obsessions to the level of cultural studies. From Saved by the Bell to the Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee sex tape, Klosterman finds ways into the dark, sticky heart of American popular culture, its arteries clogged with mindlessly consumed junk and free-floating detritus.
Eric Clapton's soup-to-nuts autobiography is a solid, sober (in both senses of the word) look back at his journey from rural England to quasi-deification. Clapton's functional, unfussy prose moves steadily through his life, devoting as much detail to his nights in the pub as his brushes with greatness. The details can be a bit random, like this bombshell about his early childhood: "I loved pies." Luckily, reader Bill Nighy supplies the enthusiasm... that Clapton left out, leaning into every emphasis as if his life depended on it. With Nighy leading the way, the facts of Clapton's life are gripping, especially his long-standing struggle with alcoholism and the tragic death of his son, recounted in a factual but hardly dispassionate style. (Oh, and then there's that whole thing about him writing "Layla" to steal George Harrison's wife.) A few myths die ugly deaths along the way; if you've ever slow-danced to "Wonderful Tonight," it may hurt to find that it was inspired by Clapton's irritation that his wife was taking too long to dress for dinner. The abridged version omits any mention of Clapton's legendary guitar solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," but does include Clapton's first impression of the Beatles as "a bunch of wankers."

Even if you only knew Renee Crist as the byline on the sharpest capsules in the back of Option magazine, her death, at age 31, came as a punch in the gut. In Love Is a Mix Tape, Rob Sheffield, who married Crist in 1991 and buried her in 1997, thinks back on their joyous, tumultuous and tragically truncated relationship through their mutual love of music. A staff writer for Rolling Stone... and frequent VH1 talking head, Sheffield pays heartfelt tribute to a woman he loved. His voice brightens as he bullet-points the subjects of their recurring marital spats, and its pitch drops noticeably as he recounts the shell-shocked months after her death, when he spent his days reading in an Applebee's so he could be sure not to run into any of their friends. In its headiest passages, Mix Tape is an inspired fusion of criticism and autobiography, as when Sheffield rereads Nirvana's In Utero not as a preemptive suicide note, but as the testament of a young husband awed and somewhat terrified by his all-consuming love for his wife. Sheffield might have borrowed a title from Cobain's widow for his strangely inspiring account of his own ordeal: Live Through This.

The visuals in Ken Burns' talking-head documentaries are almost redundant, so the audio reduction of his 19-hour PBS series feels surprisingly complete. The lack of song excerpts is unfortunate (no doubt you'll want to add the soundtrack to your iPod as well), but LeVar Burton's energetic reading brings characters from Buddy Bolden to Wynton Marsalis alive and conveys a giddy, wide-eyed enthusiasm for the birth of an American art form.

It’s hard to believe, in this age of Twilight, The Hunger Games and a million imitations thereof, that books for teen readers haven’t always been so plentiful. Though coming-of-age stories and novels told from an adolescent point of view have been written and published throughout the history of modern literature, it wasn’t until the 1950s and ’60s that teens were considered an important demographic for booksellers. And it wasn’t until the 1970s and ’80s that the YA genre as such took hold. So it’s important now, to revisit and remember the books that laid the foundation for our current YA publishing boom.

Whatever their subject matter, the classic teen reads from previous eras are the stories that spoke convincingly about the particular struggles of growing up. An early progenitor was Betty Smith, the social observer who catalogued her own urban childhood in the enduring A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Written in 1943 but set in the early century, it captured the difficulties of girlhood as a second-generation American. In the 1960s came Madeleine L’Engle, who unleashed her loveably rebellious Meg Murry on the world. A Wrinkle in Time and its quintet of fantasies gave teen readers a new kind of heroine — one who was smart and fearless, if a bit awkward.

In the early 1970s, Judy Blume broke new ground with her honest portrayal of Margaret Simon, a precocious preteen with a fixation on bras and periods. Decades later, countless homages, including a middle-aged comedienne’s memoir, would demonstrate its cultural impact.

Blume clearly understood that the search for identity is a perennial theme in real life as well as fiction, and it’s central to the great early YA books. Katherine Paterson’s Sara Louise, narrator of Jacob Have I Loved, is a kindred spirit of Margaret and Meg, a misfit struggling to redefine herself on her own terms. Likewise, Kit Gordy, the hapless boarding school student of Lois Duncan’s spooky Down a Dark Hall must speak out to save herself and her friends’ impressionable minds before they can be colonized by supernatural forces. Then, of course, there’s Nancy Garden’s 1980 landmark Annie on My Mind, which was way ahead of its time in its sensitive, almost matter-of-fact treatment of a budding lesbian relationship and a coming-out journey.

Despite their historical details, these books will inspire nods of uncanny recognition in today’s readers, because they get the gist, the pure essence of teenagehood so right. Whether you read them by flashlight under the covers or you simply never got to them, it’s time to rediscover the classics of teen fiction.

Those who have been ignored within the dominant cultural narrative must create their own stories. That’s certainly true for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered authors, who have had to revisit and accurately revise their own history throughout the years.

The six illuminating works below are listed in chronological order — not of their publication, but of the era in which each is set. Several of the books — Sarah Walters’s The Night Watch, Armistead Maupin’s Babycakes and David Sedaris ‘Naked — are ensemble pieces: novels or collections that deal with a cast of characters connected through bonds of blood, friendship and/or hardship (and in Sedaris’s case, somehow all three at once). This makes sense: Community is vital for people who have often been cast out and/or ignored by society. Perhaps this is why the “genres” — historical fiction (the Walters, again), sci-fi, humor (Sedaris, Wilde, Maupin), dramatic writing (Wilde, though not in this iteration, and Hwang’s M. Butterfly) — have been such welcoming homes for non-hetero authors.

Two books on the list, John Colapinto’s As Nature Made Him and The Trials of Oscar Wilde, are true stories. Both are simultaneously deeply upsetting and eloquent: the story of a mutilated child who had to find his own way to his true gender, and the transcripted downfall of the 19th century’s bravest and least abashed gay pioneer.

One of the mysteries that comes with reading any great author’s fiction is the personality of the man or woman behind the books – just who are these people, and what can their personal stories tell us about their fictive ones?

Here are five worthy works by five classic authors – both new and old – that help reveal the minds behind the unforgettable novels. From David Foster Wallace’s one-of-a-kind commencement address to Eric Blair’s dirt-poor life before he became George Orwell to Barbara Kingsolver’s surprising solution to an eater’s manifesto, these books show that, for some novelists, creating necessary nonfiction is all a part of the job. Like having a rich conversation with a favorite author, these books are a chance to see great writers from an entirely new, more personal angle – and they’re guaranteed to send you back to the novels, well-equipped to take them in anew.

With late spring come showers, flowers and lots of opportunities for family togetherness. And though the sentiment of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day is sweet, every family has its share of bitterness: secrets betrayed, promises broken, expectations disappointed. We turn to literature for moral guidance, and we trust great books to expose the complexities of lives both similar to — and different from — our own. The source of our most primal instincts, the living ties to our own history, family is what makes us; family is what breaks us. As Tolstoy famously wrote, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” And from unhappiness, the most affecting tales are spun. These six books — three novels, two memoirs, and short story collection — narrate the trinity of modern life: the personal journey, the family epic, the societal saga. So cut your tulips, sign your cards, and flip your pancakes! And when all of that celebrating feels like too much, sit down and enjoy stories of families who are surely worse off than your own.

Valentine’s Day is the worst. If you’re single, forget it. Even if you declare the holiday a pizza-and-vino-in-your-comfy-clothes night, you’ll feel annoyed by the stupid romance in the dumb air. And say you’re one of those ecstatically, blissfully in love people. Your most perfect scrumptious snookums will probably do something to f-up the day: buying you too-small lingerie, chocolates when you’re on a diet, or making you feel guilty for slaving away on that felt-and-fimo clay diorama you made of the entire history of your relationship because he only got you a card.

Whatever. Better to forget the whole thing and listen to a good book. How about a few chronicles of less-than conventional love? We’ll start and end with 19th Century tales of obsession. Wuthering Heights and the Picture of Dorian Gray will freak you out on several levels. Not only are they genuinely frightening, but the thought of dating any of their characters is beyond bone chilling. While The 19th Wife and The Postman Always Rings Twice may seem as different as, well, Mormons and homicidal star-crossed lovers, they both depict the American West’s lonely deserts and two-lane highways as fertile territory for sexual corruption. Tales of the City is the antidote to such made-in-the-USA alienation. Don’t have a sweetie this year? Just hang out with your friends — you’ll have a better time anyway. And Never Let Me Go is so weird and eerie and gorgeous that you might just forget all about candy hearts and roses and all of that nonsense. Maybe…

Every few years, I go on a Tales of the City binge, rereading all six volumes in one glorious swoop, immersing myself in the lives and loves of such unforgettable and hilarious characters as goodie-two-shoes Mary Anne Singleton, out-and-proud Michael Tolliver, and Anna Madrigal — Russian Hill’s grooviest landlady. Maupin began writing Tales as a serialized column in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1976. It was the perfect time and place for such a project. The city by the bay was the center of a huge cultural shift: the gay rights movement, the waning days of the hippies, clashes between high society and Berkeley radicals and a range of lurid scandals and strange occurrences, from Patty Hearst’s kidnapping to the Jonestown massacre. The author’s incomparably sharp eye and equally sharp wit — and his sympathy for all manner of lost souls — makes this one of the most cheering books ever written.

You’ve seen them in airports, and on the morning commute. They’re littered along beaches, foiled letters glittering in the sun. A good thriller is its own kind of travel — all-consuming, briskly-paced and easily digested. Escapism.

Essentially, all thrillers are about a threat to human happiness, whether it’s grand government conspiracies, computer hackers, terrorist plots, serial killers or bitter ex-lovers. But if there’s one common characteristic in the genre, it’s the clever protagonist with a divorce/heartbreak or two under her belt and a general wariness toward potential lovers — which inevitably gets tested over the course of the narrative — along with the required degree of insanity required to put herself in harm’s way, time and again.

Viewed through the lens of an expert, the thriller becomes surprisingly informative. Through Mitch Rapp, the hero of Vince Flynn’s Separation of Power, for instance, we learn about the inner workings of the CIA and the darkest corners of political power. Patricia Cornwell’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta novels expose the daily life of a forensic scientist. In Along Came a Spider we travel alongside Alex Cross, a different kind of forensic specialist, one who specializes in the makings of a criminal mind. In The Scarecrow, Michael Connelly offers a window into the worlds of both of its main settings — a newsroom and an internet security firm.

A little humor never hurts, either. In A is for Alibi and One for the Money there are enough comic interludes, neurotic foibles and quirky supporting cast to distract us — at least momentarily — from the killers lurking under the bed.

Ultimately, though, what make a thriller great are characters that fascinate us. The following are some choice thrillers with compelling protagonists (and a healthy dose of mutilation and murder) for your listening enjoyment.

The first in Sue Grafton's long-running alphabetically titled detective series, A is for Alibi sets up some of the winning elements that have made her mysteries so popular. There's Kinsey Milhone, an admirably ballsy private investigator and former cop with a solitary life and a troubled romantic past. There's a picturesque setting, the quiet, elite town of Santa Theresa (a.k.a. Santa Barbara), in which everyone knows everyone else's secrets. And there's a... murder case — the poisoning of Laurence Fife, a prominent philandering lawyer — but a cold trail (it's been eight years since his wife Nikki was wrongly accused and jailed). At the behest of Nikki, now out on parole, Kinsey delves deeper into the case, and she finds a second unsolved murder with similar characteristics. Beyond that is a web of intriguingly interlinked characters, including a Las Vegas card shark, a handful of spurned lovers, a pothead brick-layer, Laurence's impossibly charming partner Charlie and his elegant dog-grooming ex-wife Gwen. As Kinsey begins to uncover the clues and connections, she finds herself more deeply entangled than she'd ever expected. Grafton's flair for dialogue, memorable characters and her ability to let readers in on the mystery-solving action make A is for Alibi a classic in the genre.

Like Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum is a heroine whose destiny is to star in a high-profile series of mystery books — now well into the double digits. But the hapless Plum is anything but a professional, and she lives in the decidedly non-elite city of Trenton, New Jersey. Unemployed and in major debt after being laid off from the local lingerie factory, she decides to take a job... with her cousin Vinnie's bail bonding office. Her first assignment: to find and capture Joe Morelli — the guy who popped her cherry on the floor of a cannoli bakery; also the guy she happened to later slam with her car when she "accidentally" lost control of it. Now a vice cop, Morelli has been implicated on a murder charge. With the promise of $10,000 and a few lessons in criminal nabbing from her colleague Ranger spurring her on, Plum sets out on her bounty-hunting mission. A cartoon-like chase with Morelli ensues, with brief interludes for car theft and stuffed cabbage dinners at Plum's parents' house. As Stephanie investigates further, she encounters a sociopathic boxer named Benito Ramirez and he promptly begins harassing her, making the dangers of her new job seem all too real. Evanovich's storytelling cruises on comic energy and halts for tense, fearful revelations. As the determined Stephanie pushes on, this well-crafted novel delivers major bangs for the bucks.

The epitome of the contemporary thriller, Michael Connelly's 20th book is set in a failing newsroom of The Los Angeles Times, circa 2009, where protagonist Jack McEvoy, a weathered crime reporter, is given his pink slip. Determined to write a Pulitzer-worthy story as revenge on his coldhearted employers, he decides to investigate the grisly murder of a woman whose body was stuffed into a car trunk, recently pinned on Alonzo Winslow, a... teenage gang member. McEvoy envisions a story that will reveal the relationship between class and crime, recreating how an unsympathetic environment could nurture a killer's impulses. Since he's been asked to train the young reporter who will be replacing him, he enlists her help on the story. An unwitting Google search plunges the two of them into a cyber trap set by the real killer, a sophisticated internet technician based hundreds of miles away. At the same time, Jack reviews police transcripts of Winslow's "confession," and realizes that he has never truly confessed to the crime. Meanwhile, another murder with an identical blueprint has sent an innocent man to jail in Las Vegas. As Jack connects the dots, he's being closely watched and his cunning opponent is always several steps ahead of him. Connelly's seamless transition between the minds of McEvoy and the murderer make for a gripping and fully believable voyage toward The Scarecrow's inevitable conclusion.

I think those Freakonomics guys owe Malcolm Gladwell a steak dinner. Not that they’d have a particularly civil meal; these pop-psych-culture authors disagree vehemently on lots of topics, but you can trace the best-sellability of the modern generation of intellectual sleuthing books back to Gladwell’s 2000 mega-seller The Tipping Point.

There have always been Gladwellian books out there, ones that call on under-exposed statistics and previously unconnected sociological studies to explore counter-intuitive ideas about who we are and why we behave like we do. But Gladwell, in his fascinating best-sellers and articles in The New Yorker, is the one who made it look cool. In a nerdy sorta way. He’s also, you know, really good at it.

Chalk that up to boundless curiosity and journalistic persistence. Or his knack for applying scientific models to subjects like Bill Gates, Muppets and murder. And his unique perspective probably helps: Gladwell is the son of a British mathematician dad and a Jamaican psychotherapist mom, raised in Canada, living in New York City.

In the end, though, we’ll probably need some future Malcolm Gladwell to explain the tipping point of the one we have now, somebody to take the long view on who we are and why these books speak to us. That Gladwell will owe this one a steak dinner, too.

As the days count down to Christmas and we’re collectively whipped into a peppermint froth of inflatable lawn Frosties, rehashed pop carols and desperate retail markdowns, even the atheists amongst us will happily mount a tree and indulge in abstract holiday cheer. But instead of blindly gulping down another glass of egg nog and pretending none of it really matters, maybe we should take a moment to think about what this holiday stands for — and why we do or don’t believe, why we do or don’t go through the motions, whether there’s room for authentic spirituality in these times or whether religion is and always will be a divisive force. And when we reach the limits of internal dialogue, a spate of recent sacrilegious books can offer some different conversation starters.

Released in conjunction with the bicentennial of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of the Species, The Greatest Show on Earth is Dawkins' most recent lesson in anti-creationism. Taking as his starting point the notion that scientists around the world have accepted evolution as indisputable fact, Dawkins goes on to lay out the evidence, including how all animals have evolved from one another, how... animals collaborate in the evolutionary selective breeding process, how radioactive decay clocks and carbon dating can trace the lifespan of earth and how humans need only look to their own developmental process or some quickly evolving species such as Croatian lizards and Trinidadian guppies to see evolution in action. The stakes for proving evolution weigh heavily on Dawkins, who sees creationism as an absurdly misguided fantasy and a potential threat to an enlightened, scientifically informed society — not to mention an insultingly narrow vision because it fails to account for the amazing and complicated process of change at work around us every day. Thankfully for the reader, Dawkins counterbalances his dense scientific evidence with humorous asides, all the while delivering a holy smackdown to intelligent design.

Sharp-tongued, pithy and devilishly eloquent, Harris' missive — a response to hate mail he received from believers after his 2004 book The End of Faith — addresses his Christian critics directly, namely the 53 percent of Americans who consider themselves to be creationists. Letter was written out of Harris' fear for the future of a civilization that bases its decisions on the words of a single, outdated book of dubious origin. In... this slim volume, Harris systematically examines how morality has been severed from religion, and the ways that religion has justified certifiably immoral behaviors. One of his central tenets is that atheism need not identify itself as a distinct worldview, as one does not refer to "non-astrologists," but that, in its reverence for belief, the world has grown dangerously apologetic for those that simply see no reason to trust in an omnipotent being.

In some sense Harris saves most of his wrath for the liberal and moderate Christians whose vague, wishy-washy notions of faith give them a vague, wishy-washy understanding of God — finding the almighty, for instance, in the good works of humans who helped one another during the tsunami of 2004, but dismissing the natural disaster that killed hundreds of thousands of people as just another divine mystery. Why not credit ourselves for the goodness, Harris argues, and leave God out of it? It's a pretty sound argument, and one that, like Harris' book, is not easily dismissed.

If there's one line from this searing and witty polemic that sums up Hitchen's true feelings about religion, it is this: "God did not create man in his own image. Evidently it was the other way about, which is the painless explanation for the profusion of gods and religions, and fratricide both between and among faiths, that we see all about us and that has so retarded the development of civilization." In... his view, all religions are based on wishful thinking, provide a false narrative of creation and encourage sexual repression, solipsism and servility. Hitchens breaks down, by chapter, why all religions — including Hinduism and Buddhism — are equally dangerous, working from the fallacies of their sacred texts on out to the global conflicts that have been waged in the name of divine superiority. A onetime newspaper correspondent, Hitchens has seen these conflicts on the ground; as a child he was schooled in scripture and knew from an early age that his most pressing questions about God would go unanswered. These personal examples lend his writing greater heft, though all of this must be swallowed with a strong dose of Hitchens' vitriol and hyperbole.

In this debut novel, a central event has set off a chain reaction that echoes outward into a series of linked stories. God comes to earth, disguised as a young Dinka woman, in order to apologize to the Sudanese for his own impotence to help them. This young Dinka woman is promptly gunned down and her body is eaten by dogs who start speaking Aramaic and are worshipped by the Africans. When... the news of God's murder breaks out around the world, chaos ensues. Priests kill themselves and rootless teenagers with no future throw a suicide party. A young man joins with the military to fight in the apocalyptic war between the Evolutionary Psychologist Forces and the Postmodern Anthropologist Marines. Currie dips between the macro images of a post apocalyptic world and the micro moments of individual characters, trying to survive and find some redemption. But there's not much to be found. What is most disturbing about Currie's godless world is not so much its occasional flashes of humor but its familiarity to our own. And though God is killed off in the first few pages, this book actually makes a good case for why we've kept him alive for so very long.

Burroughs, who's milked his childhood with neglectful parents and his subsequent alcoholic young adulthood for a series of gleefully mean-spirited memoirs, returns to similar territory for this Christmas-themed collection of stories. Exhibit A: See Burroughs' parents boozing it up in the kitchen while he ingests the plastic appendages off of a toy Santa and winds up in the emergency room getting his stomach pumped. Though he has no illusions about God (as... a child he regularly confuses Jesus and Santa), Burroughs continues to believe in the fantasy of Christmas, each year looking for the joy and peace that seem to elude him. Burroughs' holiday nightmares seem to reach a perverse peak at age 26, when he wakes up after a bender in a strange hotel room beside a naked, hirsute older man, only to find a plush Santa suit rumpled on the floor. He does, as literary creators are wont to do, find some redemption in sober adulthood, discovering the true meaning of the holiday with a supportive and caring partner by his side. It's a Christmas tale for the ages. Whether or not Burroughs' personal spin on it will pique any sympathy from readers is another matter.

An agnostic Esquire writer with a penchant for extreme immersion journalism, Jacobs elected to follow the Bible's good words for a full year as a follow-up to his stunt book The Know-It-All (in which he read the Encyclopedia Britannica from beginning to end). What follows is a roundup of some of the Bible's best and worst injunctions. So while Jacobs learns to treat people with greater respect and cuts back on his... lying, he also avoids his wife during her period, starts honking on a shofar and eats insects. In the meantime, his wife attempts to help him "be fruitful and multiply" while, presumably, trying to explain to others why Jacobs is wandering around New York in a cloak with a ZZ Top beard. Jacobs comes away from the experience far more knowledgeable about Judeo-Christian values and he even cops to taking some of them to heart in his post-biblical life. The most valuable parts of his account, however, are actually the facts he uncovers about modern-day fundamentalists, from visits to Jerry Falwell's megachurch and a snake-handler prayer meeting to his research on the modern-day quest among American and Israeli cattle ranchers to breed a red heifer in order to become "spiritually clean." Ultimately these investigative segments tell the reader much more about the Bible's literalists than Jacob's own year of play-acting.

The idea that diverse languages are a form of divine punishment, serving only to separate us, is a popular one in numerous mythologies and religious traditions. In Genesis, humanity is unified by a common tongue until God, concerned that the people are becoming too powerful and proud, scatters them and creates different languages. Invented systems such as Esperanto have sought to remove this curse through the reinstatement of a common tongue. In an era when language death is increasingly common, however, we’d like to take a moment to celebrate language’s heterogeneity — as well as the translators who ensure that language barriers don’t prevent us from sharing our literature across cultures.

Here’s a sampling of works that have achieved international success in translation. Turkish novelist Orhan Pahmuk and Portuguese author Jose Saramago’s works have earned them both Nobel prizes. Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist holds the Guinness World record for the most-translated book. Norwegian Wood is often cited as the book that made Japanese author Haruki Murakami a national superstar, a fame that has since evolved into international celebrity. Dai Sijie’s Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, which mirrors the writer’s own experience in Maoist China before emigrating to France, was an international bestseller. Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina has not only endured in the century-plus since its publication, but continues to earn top billing in lists of history’s greatest literary works.

"Guilty pleasure" books aimed at a female audience often fall into two categories: chick lit (a more upscale or effete romance novel, often featuring a stiletto heel or a cocktail on the cover and quite often featuring Manhattan in-the-know ladies and/or smart, sensitive successful overweight women battling it out against the odds) and celebrity books (and books either by or about them). Many tend to reveal secrets (although are there any left?) about women who make up a tiny portion of the population, yet who dominate the fascination of the majority.

It's easy to be snobbish about chick lit and celebrity-authored books. At their worst, they can be formulaic, predictable, unoriginal and, perhaps most gallingly, poorly written. However, there are also clever, satirical, and just plain un-put-down-able treats that, like ice cream, sometimes can be quite a pleasure (and go down nice and easy). Let's face it — there was a reason why the Devil Wears Prada and The Nanny Diaries were runaway sensations — people enjoyed reading them.

The daughter of infamous music manager Don Arden, Osbourne grew up at once the daughter of... privilege and anger and violence. Coming of age a canny-but-shy, overweight girl surrounded by famous faces like Freddie Mercury and Jeff Lynne would be interesting enough, but Sharon famously went on to marry Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne.

There’s nothing mysterious about the appeal of a whodunit: Few genres are so interactive, and the premise of crime-solving allows for constant novelty. Detective series are beloved because we can witness the arcs of characters ‘developments episodically, growing attached to the protagonists over a series of new and exciting cases. It’s easy to see why television execs are becoming increasingly reliant on detective books as source material for their programming.

While detective series might conjure trenchcoat silhouettes behind frosted glass doors, our favorite book-to-TV series are less formulaic than the archetypal mysteries of old, spanning the globe and breaking the boundaries of realism. The closest to a conventional hardboiled classic is perhaps Ian Rankin’s Tooth and Nail, from the wildly popular Inspector Rebus series, adapted for UK television as Rebus. Sweden’s Detective Kurt Wallander falls into second place in Firewall — recently seen on Masterpiece Mystery! — approaching detective work with an existentialist dread that eclipses the pessimism of the grittiest noir. Part of the series that inspired CBS’s show Bones, Kathy Reichs ‘Bare Bones belongs in the more modern category of forensic procedurals, with the unique slant of forensic anthropology. HBO’s series based on the book of the same title features the only female detective in all of Botswana: The No. 1 Ladies ‘Detective Agency‘s Precious Ramotswe is an unswerving optimist who solves crimes through intuition and friendliness.

Then there are those series so unique as to eschew categorization. The literary source for Showtime’s quirky series Dexter presents an “ethical” serial killer and blood-spatter analyst trying to track down another serial killer whose murders he has prophetic dreams about. Meanwhile, HBO bases the hit True Blood on spunky telepath Sookie Stackhouse, who uses her powers to solve a string of vampire-related murders in Dead Until Dark.

Though incredibly different from one another, each of these books shares the makings of a satisfying mystery novel or show. Flawed as they often are, the detectives of fiction are always heroes; unhappy as they may be, happy endings are guaranteed.

As the national holiday approaches when we honor our dads with golf paraphernalia and neckties, it seems appropriate to consider some simple guidelines for fatherhood — the do’s but mostly the don’ts — as found in literature.

In the following selection of novels, bad parenting comes in surprisingly diverse forms. There’s comically bad, violently bad, pathetically bad and so bad that one understands the desires of child stars to invoke legal action and remove the offending parentage altogether. There are dads who abuse their children with physical blows, others who humiliate their children with their immaturity and awkward behavior, and some who are just too busy having existential crises to do anything useful.

Parenting may well be a flawed enterprise but it takes a certain level of reproductive evil to reach the bad-dadness of, say, Titus Andronicus. Of course, most of us are fortunate enough to have much better, nicer and more supportive parents, and for that we must give thanks this Father’s Day.

Whether you travel for a day, a weekend, a week or beyond, your vacation will undoubtedly feel longer to a child — so effortlessly can a young mind stretch time into an almost endless sequence. Because they're escapes from the ordinary into exciting new places, road trips can activate and stimulate impressionable young minds. Still, there are times when watching miles roll by can lull and sometimes even dull the senses, so it's important to feed the young imagination.

There are stories that have survived generations of child rearing, stories that are designed to be told again and again. Often, they reinforce life lessons, or provide brief glimpses into strange new worlds. You'll create plenty of "real life" stories during your journey, but while you're on the road, why not let the masters see you through?

Rudyard Kipling, Jules Verne, Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift — these are just a few of the dreamers who have provided some magical material that can help make your road trip a true adventure. But be warned — these stories are as alluring to adults as they are to youngsters, so you might just find yourself taken in by their collective spells.

This time of year, drugstore aisles are packed with cards extolling the virtues of the Best Mom Ever. It seems that the happy families Tolstoy once spoke of are truly alike enough to warrant the mass printing of cards with specific childhood memories of cookies, homework help, rides to soccer practice. There are apparently also enough maternal saints to make “Thanks for putting up with me” cards popular.

It’s rare for a mother to give her child a “Thanks for putting up with me card,” but that doesn’t mean they aren’t deserved from time to time. While some of us are lucky enough to have the Best Mom Ever all to ourselves, millennia of world history have shown that many moms tend to be more Joan Crawford than Donna Reed.

In honor of your mother and totally decent mothers everywhere, we offer this selection of some of the meanest mothers in literature. There ought to be a mother in this mix who can make you appreciate all the mistakes your mother didn’t make — unless your mother is the type to actually steal children’s souls, in which case you really do have the worst mom ever.

Janet Fitch's harrowing bildungsroman offers not one, but four unfit mothers. When her bewitching, narcissistic mom is convicted of murdering a boyfriend, Astrid Magnusson is shuttled through a series of foster homes, each dysfunctional in its own way. One foster mother treats the 14-year-old Astrid as a sexual rival and takes extreme measures when her paranoia becomes manifest. Astrid is then taken in as a watchdog of sorts for a loving but... unbalanced actress. Though imprisoned, Astrid's mother Ingrid does her best to interfere with her daughter's happiness in any way possible, and when she tries to interfere with the bond Astrid has developed, the results are devastating. By contrast, living with a woman who doesn't want foster children but uses them as de facto employees is as good as it gets. Read movingly by Oprah Winfrey, White Oleander is an intense and mesmerizing meditation on the warped forms love sometimes assumes.

Novelist A.M. Homes was 31 when her biological mother, absent since her birth, decided to make contact. She sent word indirectly, through a lawyer, that she wouldn't object to hearing from Homes. Hesitantly, Homes initiated contact. Having imagined her mother glamorous and perfect, Homes was disappointed to discover a needy woman who believed, after three decades of absence, that the daughter she gave up should adopt her and take care of her.... She ambushed Homes at readings, traced Homes' address, and began planning a move to her city without Homes' invitation. She called, furious that Homes had not sent her a valentine, to suggest that Homes kill herself. Meanwhile, Homes' biological father — a married man with whom her mother had an affair — arranged clandestine meetings in hotels, stalled over whether to tell his real family and seemed at times more interested in reconnecting with his former mistress than his daughter.

The least the two could have given her was answers, but instead they gave her childish presents like lockets and sweaters. They're completely uncooperative when it comes to telling her their family histories, so she turns to libraries and genealogical websites to uncover her biological roots. In doing so, she begins to see her biological family line as an ancestral history that extends far beyond her parents, all the while realizing how her adoptive family's lineage has influenced her identity without the aid of genetics.

The bad mother in Neil Gaiman's children's fable isn't actually young Coraline's mother, but rather her "other mother." When Coraline enters an alternate dimension through a locked door in her flat, she meets her other mother, a paler, skinnier version of her own mother, with writhing Medusa hair. This other mother has filled Coraline's "other" room with fantastical living toys and stocked her closet with the bright clothing her real mother denies... her. Whereas Coraline's real parents feed her frozen entrees or exotic dishes she dislikes, her other mother makes a mean cheese omelet. The other mother's love for Coraline is real — she's constructed an entire world in order to trap her — but it's a nonspecific, acquisitive love that doesn't come close to the real thing. The selfish love might be tolerable in exchange for all she offers, but she's also got a nasty habit of stealing children's souls and locking them away for eternity. Sort of a dealbreaker. Gaiman is an immensely engaging reader, with distinct and evocative voices for all of his characters.

After separating from her alcoholic professor husband, Augusten Burroughs' mother Deirdre embarked on a journey of self-discovery. Under the care and encouragement of her particularly indulgent therapist, Dr. Finch, Deirdre began experimenting with her identity and sexuality, taking up first with a minister's wife and then with a fellow patient. Augusten was exposed to more intimate sexual details of his mother's life than most 13-year-olds could have withstood. At Dr. Finch's house,... where his mother deposited him upon realizing that her responsibilities as a mother were incompatible with her destiny as a famous poet, Augusten began a relationship with a man twenty years his senior, a match approved of by both his mother and Dr. Finch. The accuracy of Burroughs' depictions of his mother and the Finches has been questioned and subjected to legal action, but purely as a character, Deirdre is a mother whose love you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

Though there’s no substitute for the travel experience, reading about other people going to foreign places offers its own rewards. Travel writing can be a kind of preparation for future trips, a way to seek advice and wisdom from those who have gone before. It can also be a vicarious form of escape, a means of checking out all the wild or dangerous or beautiful corners of a place without ever having to leave the predictable upholstery, meals and shampoos of home.

Former Monty Python member Michael Palin has been tempting his audience out of their armchairs for years — giving rise to a phenomenon known as the Palin Effect, in which the places the much-loved travel writer/television host visits suddenly become popular destinations. His shows Himalaya and New Europe, charting journeys through the vast Eastern mountain range and Eastern Europe, respectively, are the most recent in a series of seven such shows and all have been turned into books with audio versions. Palin’s sly charm, intellectual curiosity and generous approach make him an amiable narrator — whether he’s sampling the medicinal power of leeches in Estonia or milking a yak in Tibet, Palin tirelessly delivers informed, entertaining guides.

New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean is another seasoned journeywoman, but her travels — to places as varied as Midland, Texas, home of President G.W. Bush, Bhutan and Cuba — have a more directed quality, with her reading of a place revealed as an integral layer of a larger narrative. For Orlean, places are treated as characters in the story, and their particulars are relayed with bemused wonder, like so many personal quirks.

In another category of travel narrative, Eat, Pray, Love and The Geography of Bliss are both books of personal seeking. Elizabeth Gilbert embarked on her three-leg journey to Italy, India and Indonesia, seeking physical gratification and spiritual fulfillment on the heels of a divorce and her account of that yearlong search is a highly idiosyncratic reflection on her interior and exterior landscapes. The Geography of Bliss, meanwhile, finds its semi-miserable journalist author Eric Weiner skipping around the world, looking for the lost secrets of contentment in places such as Qatar, Iceland, Switzerland and Thailand, his quest offering unexpected entertainment and enlightenment.

Whatever function they serve, the best travel books succeed because of an author’s personality, which should beckon readers always onward. These books do exactly that, with style, pathos and comedy to spare.

National holidays are usually just that: national. But St. Patrick’s Day is perhaps the only national holiday to be widely celebrated outside of the country it honors. On March 17, millions become honorarily Irish, an identity they associate with drinking green beer and wearing shamrock face paint. It goes without saying that there’s much more to being Irish. Ireland, for one thing, has had more than its fair share of troubles. Whether in spite or because of this, it’s also had more than its fair share of great authors. This St. Patrick’s Day, honor your own real or imagined Irish heritage by checking out one of the country’s best exports of the non-alcoholic variety.
