Summary

Dreams from My Father

By: Barack Obama

Narrarated by: Barack Obama

In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

Pictured in lefthand photograph on cover: Habiba Akumu Hussein and Barack Obama, Sr. (President Obama's paternal grandmother and his father as a young boy). Pictured in righthand photograph on cover: Stanley Dunham and Ann Dunham (President Obama's maternal grandfather and his mother as a young girl).

Barack Obama, Dreams from My Father
2007 | Label: Random House Audio

The Illinois Senator comes to terms with his father's legacy.
Barack Obama's first memoir, released well before he was a glimmer in the Democratic Party's eye, is a fascinating, painfully honest examination of family, race and identity — and, on audiobook, the aural equivalent of a page-turner. Obama's father was born in a Kenyan village and journeyed to Hawaii for university, where he met Obama's mother, a Midwestern-bred idealist. The union was short-lived, though, and Obama's father remained a shadowy figure until he died in the '80s. In the meantime, Obama grew up with his mother and her second husband in Indonesia and spent a troubled adolescence in Hawaii with his white grandparents before finding inspiration through a career as a community organizer, and finally, peace with his father's legacy.

Obama, as evidenced by his galvanizing speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention (included here as an audio appendix), is an enchanting orator with a compelling voice that glides smoothly over his lyrical prose and assumes other characters' dialogue with ease. Despite the narrative's dramatic, almost archetypal themes, Obama manages to tell his story with relaxed candor. It's difficult to imagine that this book, with all its psychological insight, global consciousness and authentic populism could have been written by any other presidential candidate in recent history.

How's that Hope-N-Change...

spunkasaurus

...workin' out for ya? BHO demonstrates daily that he is the worst and most destructive president in the last 100 years, and perhaps the worst ever. He is unqualified for the position, and only wants to BE president, not actually DO the job. Americans are rejecting his reckless socialism and appeasement, and the nation will sweep in waves of responsible conservative leadership in 2010 and 2012.

Worthwhile

An interesting, moving story. The fact that some things are left unanswered in this book makes you want to learn more. A lesson that we can all dare to dream big I suppose. Obama did an excellent job narrating as well.

Poor ignorant folks

It fills me with sadness and frustration to see so many reviews written by people with hate in their hearts who obviously are used to having their conservative pabulum fed to them before night-night and believe in every hateful, slanderous and spiteful rumour about our next Chief with the blind uninformed false patriotism Bush invented. I see the heart of President Obama within these pages, and truly believe this man will be one of our greatest leaders.

An Unbranded Stray Calf for President?

Qajariaq

The opinions voiced here from the obvious “anti-Obama” people are uninformed to say the very least. Without a doubt, it is not possible to develop such inflammatory and misguided judgments of Barack’s writing having actually read his work. It is plain to see if having read just even the first chapter, that such vile and bigoted commentary is simply inappropriate and inaccurate; perhaps even immoral. But heck, who’s perfect? I look forward to reclaiming the land I grew up in called the United States of America with the guidance and leadership of Barack Obama. The United States of Amavericka will undoubtedly pass into obscurity along with the shallow, mundane and dangerous leadership which seeks to destroy the last remaining vestiges of freedom with cliché, lipstick and shameless dishonesty.

A great book, full of hope

KanuK

Why are Republicans so hateful? They only care about themsleves. They like guns, they like war, they don't care about the environment, they don't like gays, they don't want universal health care, they want to drill for more oil instead of investing in alternative energy ... They are reactionnary to change.

Pales in comparison

John McCain's family history is much more compelling, yet he has chosen not to write about it. Obama has no accomplishments of any kind to his credit, with the exception of having written three books. No wonder he considers his management of his own campaign as sufficient executive experience to be president. BHO is going down in flames. Hillary is laughing.

What about George?

I wonder if brother George Obama in Kenya who survives on $1/month will be penning such a fawning recollection of Dad...

Painfully honest, fascinating life story

photographer45

Like the man or despise him, but this book displays an honesty and deep retrospection seldom displayed by a politician. The difficulties of growing up a male with an absentee father, of having a father choose his education over his wife and son, and growing up black in a household of whites are all explored by Obama in a remarkably unsentimental fashion. Anyone with an interest, be it pro or con, in this man's presidential aspirations should read or listen to this book before forming any concrete opinions.

Authors as Narrators

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Great authors bare their souls in the pages of books, but the bravest writers go a step further and read their words aloud. When authors narrate their own audiobooks they instantly add a level of intimacy to their work and they can even help their audience to uncover new layers of meaning in the text. The books below encompass a variety of genres and topics, but they all contain a personal touch that is sure… more »
