Max Brooks, The Zombie Survival Guide
2007 | Label: Random House Audio

A thorough handbook for how to avoid having the living dead chomp on your brains.
Because “ignorance is the undead’s strongest ally,” Max Brooks has written The Zombie Survival Guide, a thorough handbook for how to avoid having the living dead chomp on your brains. The book exhaustively explores fact and fiction about zombie physiology and behavior (they don’t actually live on brains), examines historical instances of the rising of the dead (never, ever explore a seemingly abandoned ship) and provides tips for both fight and flight in environments as diverse as your home or the North Pole. Never again will you be trapped on the second floor of a house swarming with zombies and not know how to do anything but scream. Both Brooks and narrator Marc Cashman avoid being overly “winky,” employing a matter-of-fact, Boy Scout manual tone when discussing how to outwit corpses. A too-literal, scientific explanation for the undead involving a virus takes away from the creatures' inherent horror — a mistake Brooks avoids in the follow-up, World War Z, which effectively imagines a war between humans and zombies. Still, there is much that is clever and entertaining, making this the one book David Sedaris recommended on his recent lecture tour that was not written by David Sedaris.

Look OUT!

Loinsworth

This is a surprisingly good listen considering you don't get the pictures and graphics typically associated with a guide book. I'm generally the type of person who day dreams about the end of the world, and this guide prepares you for the worst...but... if zombies ever CAN run (as opposed to slowly lumbering), then this guide will need a major update! In all seriousness, this is a good primer for the even better World War Z!

it is a very interesting book on the COVER. its very factual... i dont really know what to think. the "accounts" they have dont seem very realistic. and some strategies dont seem possible. but for the most part i liked it. 7 1/2 out of 10.

Don't like it

It starts of well but turns to worse. The author could benefit from a sounder understanding of science to make his science fiction. The trite New Age "we only use 5% of our brains" myth was taken to be a scientific truth - wich is a great turn of, a mistake and a style brake form the premise of the format given in the novel. Namely that it is a laymans science book about zombies.

Excellent Work

MadimusBeefcake

I listen to it at work: it makes time fly and I find something new in the detail of the book each time I listen to it. My wife believes that this is the biggest threat since Y2K and we should begin rationing immediately. I want to get all the details straight in my head so that I will be able to remember what to do when the threat is imminent. Who would have thought inner city schools would be the safest place to hold up?

ZOMG! I Must Survive!

This is a great book. I recommend it to anyone who loves Zombie movies, games, or anything Zombie related. Max Brooks put a lot of thought into making this book sound very serious and scientific. It was very imaginative and descriptive. It's hard not to laugh when listening about the anatomy of a zombie. It's the comedy style of "no really, I'm serious!" It's also well read by Marc Cashman. I'll be looking into listening to other books read by Marc Cashman (which btw, eMusic I love that you have a reader search too) Fully recommended audiobook for anyone looking for something to put a smile on your face

Suspended Belief

DEW1701

This is an amazing book. It is a masterfuly crafted FICTION. The key word in that sentance is fiction. None the less it is designed in a way that is really quite believable and in some cases slightly funny. I would encourage you to download this book but when listening to it remember that ZOMBIES ARE NOT REAL.

this should be part of 10th grade curriculum. They are coming....it will happen...and I am serious as a heart attack. no no no....not some fanboy...not some crazy person that believes everything (thats all of you who watch too much tv) it's probable, and when they come, and your fucked, you'll be wishing you read this.
