“The end was near.” -Voices from the Zombie War

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

Most of all, the audiobook captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the listener, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Brooks says in his introduction, “By excluding the human factor, aren’t we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn’t the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as ‘the living dead’?”

An oral history of the war against the zombies.
World War Z by Max Brooks is an "oral history" of the war against the zombies, told through interviews with the ordinary and not-so-ordinary men drawn into that global struggle. Rumors of a "walking dead" disease are ignored, governments misread or try to profit from the crisis and the human race literally has to run for the hills. Slowly, courage and common sense prevails. The book speaks with wit and intelligence to the general feeling over the last few years that something bad is going down. Brooks, in two books now, brings a refreshing logic (yes, logic) to tales of the undead. Why would zombies stop marching at the sea? How long would it take the military to realize uranium-depleted shells were useless and what soldiers really needed were sharp, heavy shovels? When would people accept it was no use making air holes for the snarling relatives they've locked up? A book of interviews is perfect for audio, and an all star cast, including the author, Alan Alda, John Turturro, various Reiners and Mark Hamill, avoid caricature, as they bring to life such characters as an aging Chinese doctor, an Israeli operative, a CIA agent and a Palestinian youth.

Only if...

Loinsworth

...only if there was a WWZ, then this would be one excellent recount of the event! The performance from the diverse cast was extremely well done -- this is what makes audio books shine as a medium. The story was thrilling - Max Brooks developed a diverse group of characters who were all unique and added decent twists to the overall plot. I recommend this read for anyone who enjoys a good post-apocalyptic read!

I hated this book

tlsj69

To This book's credit, it goes into great detail to describe the zombie world but it is full of cliches and bad accents. You may find this ironic or amusing, I was just annoyed.

I went in with low expectations but taking a chance. I was absolutely blown away by how interesting this book was. In fact I listened to parts of the book multiple times because it was so engaging. 5 stars.

this book is very entertaining, and seems like an "underdog" of books. it keeps you glued to the book ( audio book, per say)even when you know there is something better you can be doing.9 out of 10.

Compelling listen

I originally looked at this book in a bookstore. I thought the premise, while absurb, was entertaining. I figured that rather than read it I'd listen to it. I was right. This has to be one of the best books I have ever listened to. Good storyline, some humor, abstract concepts made real in a surreal way. I've now listened to it for the third time (long commute)rather than listen to some other books that I have on CD and have found that I like to relisten to this book rather than the new books.

I heard about this book from a message board. I bought it and found I could not put it down. I sent it to a friend, and he response was that I had slipped a gear if I thought he would like this. Then he started reading and found he could not put it down either. Great summer read/listen

Read ultra-realistically by a variety of b-list celebs, this is a great listen. My only qualms are the faux-Chinese accent in the beginning but the rest is compellingly read. Only minor skipping on a few tracks.

eMusic’s Best Books of the Decade

By eMusic Editorial Staff

Listening to a book is often a very different experience from reading one, so coming up with a list of the decade's best was a challenging task. Exquisite prose and craftsmanship are key elements of great reads, of course, but these books also have to sound good through headphones. Tight plotting and riveting narrative performances are crucial. The best audiobooks of the past ten years may not all be worthy of fancy literary prizes (although… more »
