God wants you to be happy. Jesus too. They both do.
You might figure a hardcore Christian like Joel Osteen — a Texas pastor who invites "God" or "Jesus" into every other sentence — would be miles away from the choose-your-own-religion vibe that the Dalai Lama was throwing out, but not so. Both men prescribe soul-searching as a means to attitude change, and both believe in the power of a positive attitude. There's plenty of divergence, of course. All the Bible-quoting, for one thing. Yeah, Osteen leads a 20,000-plus megachurch, but he's not your typical fire-and-brimstone preacher. Hell gets no shout-outs. "Sins" are dubbed "mistakes," and everything is forgivable. The main message here is to find your passion and pursue it, to make happiness happen through life changes, no matter how scary. "Spiritual growth is a process," Osteen warns. Don't expect overnight success. But rest assured, "God has good things in store for you." Secular self-helpers might run screaming from all the heavy Christian overtones — no matter how New Agey the message &#8212 but this surely resonates with those for whom religion and spirituality are the same thing.
