Summary

I Drink for a Reason

By: David Cross

Narrarated by: Les Savy Fav, Jon Benjamin, David Cross, Kristin Schaal

After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show With Bob And David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Whether deflating the pomposity of religious figures, calling out the pathetic symbiosis of pseudo-celebrity and its leaching fandom, or merely pushing the buttons of the way-too-easily offended P.C. left or the caustic, double-standard of the callous (but funnier) right, Cross has something to say about everyone, including his own ridiculous self.

Now, for the first time, Cross is weaving his media mockery, celebrity denunciation, religious commentary and sheer madness into book form, revealing the true story behind his almost existential distaste of Jim Belushi ("The Belush"), disclosing the up-to-now unpublished minutes to a meeting of Fox television network executives, and offering up a brutally grotesque run-in with Bill O'Reilly. And as if this wasn't enough for your laughing pleasure in these troubled times, some of the pieces splinter off with additional material being created online in exclusive video and animated web content created solely for the book-a historical first (presumably)!

With a mix of personal essays, satirical fiction posing as truth, advice for rich people, information from America's least favorite Rabbi and a top-ten list of top-ten lists, I DRINK FOR A REASON is as unique as the comedian himself, and cannot be missed.

David Cross, I Drink for a Reason
2009 | Label: Hachette Audio

David Cross disdains you for being too lazy to read the print version — would you have it any other way?
Stand-up comic, writer, sketch artist ("Mr. Show") and comic actor ("Arrested Development") David Cross' sojourn into writing translates well into audiobook form; at times, it feels as much a comic album as it does a book. The text itself is a hodgepodge of first- person rants, sensational satirical fiction and list-based humor pieces, cobbled together from the wide span of Cross' career (some even involve explanations of when and how they were originally written).

The tone varies so much that even the most hardcore Cross fan is likely to find it uneven, but there's also so much material that if you find one piece dragging, the next one (and there are many) just might pack the wry punch you were hoping for. The strongest pieces tend to be Cross' own personal essays and the occasions when he aims his barbed tongue at himself and the progressive, liberal subject matter that he's known for. Sensitive listeners beware: this book is not for those who don't care for strong language, sexual subject matter or being mocked for purchasing an audiobook instead of reading the hard copy.

some old stuff

zorak

He has about 5 blisteringly funny "chapters" (in about 90). I found most of it worth listening to just to hear him go off. I have to admit near the end it was a hodgepodge of skits/essays thrown together, and some of them were kinda boring.

good not great

this is good. if you're a fan. if not, probably not the best book for you. i found it less a cohesive book than a collection of thoughts, skits and older writings but no less enjoyable. anyone finding him overly negative are kind of missing the point i think, he's a social commentator through comedy and doesn't leave himself out of the line of fire when pointing out foibles of humanity that simply don't make sense. optimistically pessimistic would be my view of him. well worth a listen.

He drinks because...

He's sad. I think David Cross is one of the funniest guys ever. However, his angry stereotyping hate humor gets old. It can only come from a dark soul.
