Summary

The Host

By: Stephenie Meyer

Narrarated by: Kate Reading

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Stephenie Meyer, The Host
2010 | Label: Hachette Audio

Friendly parasites have descended upon planet Earth to invade the bodies of human beings. Their mission? To spread peace, health and harmony. Indeed — this is the premise of Stephenie Meyers' first novel for adults, The Host, and the premise is a good one. Humans are quickly outnumbered as aliens commandeer the planet, abolishing war and curing cancer. The parasites are "all things good: compassionate, patient, honest, virtuous, and full of love." It's a weird, weird, world.

"Wanderer" is the name of an alien soul inserted into the body of a human host named Melanie Stryder. Only problem is, unlike the other humans, Melanie's spirit won't let go — her human consciousness persists even after her body is no longer hers. Wanderer and Melanie, trapped in the same form, wind up on an odyssey in search of Melanie's family, who maintain a rebel holdout in the Arizona desert. The subtlety of Meyers' book will come as a pleasant surprise to those readers skeptical of the Twilight phenomenon, for which the author is also responsible. The Host is fresh, briskly paced and brimming with the kinds of imaginative details that make (or, in their absence, break) a sci-fi thriller.

Imaginative and spell-binding - I could not put my mp3 player down! I would definately encourage anyone to listen to this book. The story is fabulously written enabling you to relate to both characters in the one body and the storyteller makes the characters come to life.
