By: Anthony Swofford

Narrarated by: Anthony Swofford

In his New York Times bestselling chronicle of military life, Anthony Swofford weaves his experiences in war with vivid accounts of boot camp, reflections on the mythos of the marines, and remembrances of battles with lovers and family.

When the U.S. Marines–or "jarheads"–were sent to Saudi Arabia in 1990 for the Gulf War, Anthony Swofford was there. He lived in sand for six months; he was punished by boredom and fear; he considered suicide, pulled a gun on a fellow marine, and was targeted by both enemy and friendly fire. As engagement with the Iraqis drew near, he was forced to consider what it means to be an American, a soldier, a son of a soldier, and a man.

"War is hell… where do I sign up?"

A soldier long before he was an author, Kurt Vonnegut once observed that writing an anti-war book was as futile as writing an anti-glacier book. But maybe “futile” is too optimistic. In the early pages of Jarhead, Anthony Swofford recalls how he and his fellow Gulf War marine grunts absorbed every second of every anti-war movie they could find — Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, etc. — and got psyched up for their own chance to see some action. These are young dudes, 18 or 20. They think guns are cool. They like the idea of being in the shit, of screwing prostitutes, of having to stay alive under fucked up circumstances. Like the people who trained them, they are mean, cruel and sadistic. Jarhead is an unflinchingly detailed book, a personal memoir and a real-life ground-level peak into soldier culture. As a narrator and a confessor, Swofford is graphic and foul-mouthed, unapologetic but often mournful for his own lost innocence. It’s an utterly gripping and horrifying journey, made scarier still by the thought that some kid will come away from Jarhead wishing he could live it.

eMusic’s Best Books of the Decade

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Listening to a book is often a very different experience from reading one, so coming up with a list of the decade's best was a challenging task. Exquisite prose and craftsmanship are key elements of great reads, of course, but these books also have to sound good through headphones. Tight plotting and riveting narrative performances are crucial. The best audiobooks of the past ten years may not all be worthy of fancy literary prizes (although… more »
