Summary

The Sword and the Shield

By: Christopher Andrew, Vasili Mitrokhin

Narrarated by: Robert Whitfield

Based on unprecedented access to a secret archive of intelligence, The Sword and the Shield presents by far the most complete picture we have ever had of the KGB and its operations in the United States and Europe, revealing for the first time the full extent of its worldwide network.

Vasili Mitrokhin worked for almost thirty years in the foreign intelligence archives of the KGB. Mitrokhin spent over a decade making notes and transcripts of these highly classified files which, at enormous personal risk, he smuggled daily out of the archives and kept beneath his dacha floor. Now he has offered Christopher Andrew exclusive access to his archive. The picture that emerges in this sobering book will force us to acknowledge that there was indeed an enemy—and that he was very much in our midst.

Excellent read on KGB

These comments refer to the unabridged edition as narrated by Robert Whitfield. If you're into the history of the KGB, then this book is for you. The book has plenty of good reviews on Amazon, so I won't review the content. A couple comments: 1) Audio quality was fine. A couple places where the quality changed noticeably in between files, but not much of an effect. The first time made me think the audio files I downloaded were out of order (they were not) 2) The price can't be beat. Amazon is charging $100+ for the equivalent audio CD, while eMusic has it the mp3s for the equivalent of $10. 3) Narration is excellent. 4) Unfortunately, there appears to be no audio book of the second volume of the Mitrokhin archives. 5) The .mp3 files totaled 163 files when I got the book; it now claims there's only 23 files.
