Summary

Tell-All

By: Chuck Palahniuk

Narrarated by: Hillary Huber

Chuck Palahniuk’s Sunset Boulevard-inflected homage to Old Hollywood is both a dark reimagining of All about Eve and a hilarious assault on celebrity.

The protagonist is Hazie Coogan, who for decades has tended to the outsized needs of Katherine “Miss Kathie” Kenton, a larger-than-life star who has survived multiple marriages, career comebacks, cosmetic surgeries, and emotional dramas. But danger lurks with the arrival of a gentleman caller named Webster Carlton Westward III, who worms his way into Miss Kathie’s heart and boudoir. Hazie discovers that this bounder has already written his celebrity tell-all memoir, which foretells Miss Kathie’s death in a forthcoming Lillian Hellman-penned musical extravaganza. As the body count mounts, Hazie must execute a plan to save Katherine Kenton for her fans—and for posterity.

If not for being on audiobook I don't think I could have finished this one. The performance was great, but the book was just so tedious what with the constant name dropping of long dead and forgotten movie stars. Perhaps you need to know a lot about the history of Hollywood's yesteryear to fully appreciate this one. I just couldn't get into it.

This is a very dark and very funny book. It's about celebrity and the sheltered and sometimes surreal lives of the very famous. Take the comparisons with Sunset Boulevard and All About Eve with a grain of salt; I also found myself thinking about old Roadrunner cartoons (featuring Elizabeth Taylor) from time to time. Hillary Huber's performance is just amazing. Is there an award show for audio books? If not, someone should invent one and give the first statue to Huber. To sum it up, this audio book is short, sweet and sour, and very enjoyable. (And we're all very lucky to have out-lived Lillian Hellman!)
