Summary

The Shadow-Line

By: Joseph Conrad

Narrarated by: Fred Williams

Written at the start of the Great War, when his son Borys was at the Western Front, The Shadow-Line is Conrad’s supreme effort to open man’s eyes to the meaning of war through the stimulus of art. In many ways an autobiographical narrative, this masterpiece of his final period relates the story of a young and inexperienced sea captain whose first command finds him with a ship becalmed in tropical seas and a crew smitten with fever. As he wrestles with his conscience and with the sense of isolation that his position imposes, the captain crosses the “shadow-line” between youth and adulthood.
It is the qualities, both individual and collective, needed to confront the ship’s crisis that symbolize the qualities needed by humanity, not only to face evil and destruction but also to come to terms with life.
“The ship, this ship, our ship, the ship we serve, is the moral symbol of our life.” —Joseph Conrad

THE SHADOW LINE by Joseph Conrad

I do audio books, lots of audio books. I blame it on my ADD and Dyslexia but really it's just a love of being read to. It was a gift from my teacher mother reading to her three sons, the Bible, Lasie Come Home, history books and radio. It was that teacher mother putting a seashell to my three year old ear and saying "That's the sound of the ocean!" that sealed my fate to wonder the seas of the world long before I ever saw a body of water larger than a lake. And I did run away to sea some 46 years ago and never left the sea for I still sail. When the winters grow long and lifes other obligations anchors me ashore, I turn to Conrad to remind me why I long to feel a swell under my legs again. The Shadow Line is just such a story to fan the wander lust into hot flame again. The story is short, and in the style of Conrads other master pieces, Lord Jim, The Secret Sharer, Youth. It will take you from where you are to a world you want to go.
