In 1349, one small town in Germany disappeared and was never resettled. Tom, a contemporary historian, and his theoretical physicist girlfriend, Sharon, become interested. By all logic, the town should have survived, but it didn't. Why? What was special about Eifelheim that it utterly disappeared more than 600 years ago?
In 1348, as the Black Death is gathering strength across Europe, Father Deitrich is the priest of the village that will come to be known as Eifelheim. A man educated in science and philosophy, he is astonished to become the first contact between humanity and an alien race from a distant star when their interstellar ship crashes in the nearby forest.
Tom, Sharon, and Father Deitrich have a strange and intertwined destiny of tragedy and triumph in this brilliant novel by the winner of the Robert A. Heinlein Award.

Beautiful and thought provoking . . .
I fell in love with Eifelheim. It was my first audio book, and I purchased it, I admit, because I thought it might help me to sleep. Instead I was swept along with it's rich premise and wonderful, moving characters. I did, finally, sleep -- but I always rewound to where I remembered leaving off. I know I will listen again and again to this engaging vision of two worlds colliding. If you love science and sci fi, if your curious about the Middle Ages, or if you just like a good story well told, Eifelheim is a place you should visit -- and I highly recommend the journey.
Wonderful page turner
A great mix of historical fiction & science fiction. So well written at times I wish I could have read it rather than listened to it. Nevertheless the narration is top-notch and well done. While there is a compelling contemporary story of two modern-day people piecing together the truth of an alien visit to 1300s plague-invested Europe, the center of the book is the culture clash between the European world view and the alien one. So many great details, so smartly recognized, moved forward by intriguing characters, cultures, and plot. Oh, and no skipping tracks as with other eMusic books.
