  • Superchunk: Here's Where the Senate Comes In

    eMusic Acts

Superchunk/Portastatic mainman Mac McCaughan recently testified to a Senate committee on the state of radio, and what it portends for the indie music market. The Chunk's opinions are to be expected — conglomerates bad, music good — but McCaughan did a commendable job of expressing them. "If you value localism, competition and diversity, Congress and the FCC must recognize that further deregulation is not the answer," he stated. Now, as to how much weight that statement carries with members of the committee? Of that we are extremely dubious.

  • Freshly Ripped: Brunswick Records & Vee Jay Ltd

    eMusic Acts

There are two exciting additions to the site we'd like to report: Brunswick Records and Vee Jay. Both labels specialize in classic African-American music — R&B and soul in the case of Brunswick; jazz, R&B and blues for Vee Jay — and feature spectacular recordings. Brunswick boasts significant material from the wonderful Jackie Wilson and the Chi-Lites, while John Lee Hooker leads the Vee Jay roster, which also includes material from Jimmy Reed and Jerry Butler. Both labels are significant new members of the eMusic community. Welcome to them both!

  • Going Green: Jewel Cases

    eMusic Acts

As all of us converts to digital music know, CDs have become increasingly irrelevant, and take up quite a bit of space to boot. So what's someone who's looking to go whole-hog digital to do? How about recycle those old jewel cases! Looking around for suitable places to handle the job, we came across Green Disk, which seems to have a good rep as far as we can tell. For as little as $7, they will send you a box to get rid of the detritus, and ensure that it makes it to a proper recycling center. Give it a try.

  • The (Lower) Cost of Doing Business

    eMusic Acts

In the wake of the Radiohead name-your-own-price brouhaha (and good for them!), we're seeing a wholesale embracing of this new transaction model from all corners of the music world. Of particular interest to us is the new Saul Williams album, which is being produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The album is available in two prices: you can either pay $5, or you can pay nothing. To take part, head here.

The second, and perhaps most notable, case involves Paste magazine (a regular eMusic partner, it should be noted). Paste is offering a year's subscription at whatever price you deem appropriate ($1 is the minimum). Go here to take advantage of the offer.

We're eager to see who hijacks this bandwagon next — Spoon tickets for baked goods? Arcade Fire performing for spare change? — and we'll keep you updated on who it might be.
