Michael Azerrad
Dear eMusic subscriber,

I'm the new Editor-in-Chief of eMusic and since we're relaunching the site, redoing everything from top to bottom, I thought I'd fill you in on the exciting new direction eMusic has taken.

By now you've probably seen the eMusic tag-line "Choose to Discover." That pretty much says it all -- while the Internet has provided anyone with a computer with an unbelievable bounty of options, you still really do have to choose to discover new music; if you don't, the major labels and mammoth radio networks are more than happy to choose it for you.

So if you're the kind of person who likes to seek out the good stuff, eMusic is a place where you can find more great music than you could possibly hear in a lifetime. It's where classic and cutting-edge coexist; where music from other cultures finds a niche; where music can heal mind, body and spirit; and where you can also find sonic pleasures like comedy, spoken word and even environmental sounds. Music isn't made in a pressing plant, it's made in hearts and minds, through frustration and inspiration, and we've collected a truly massive amount of the best independently produced efforts. There's music you've always heard was great but never got around to buying, music you heard a little of but wanted to hear more, music you didn't even know you had to have until someone told you about it. It's all here.

For years, there have been more albums released on independent labels than on majors. eMusic itself has tens of thousands of records available. The question is, how best to navigate through all of them? With the relaunch of this site, there are many ways to do that -- brilliant technical tools, search functions and, perhaps best of all, the brains of some of the world's best music critics.

In addition to all those MP3s, we now offer a first-class editorial team to direct you to the best that eMusic has to offer. These writers -- and they're among the very best in their respective fields -- are enthusiastic and deeply knowledgeable, and they agreed to join our team because they're as excited by the project as I am.

Together, these people make eMusic the best general-interest music magazine in the world. You read that correctly. Even better, not only do you get top-notch writing, you get to hear just what it is you're reading about. And if you want to share your thoughts, you can still visit the message boards or, if you have a pressing query, go to the letters section in each genre and ask the columnist a question. They'll personally answer three or four letters a month. We aren't just speaking to you, you're speaking to us.

With open ears,

Michael Azerrad
