Q: Can you explain what the different track and album download buttons mean?
A: Sure. Here’s all the buttons you’ll see and what they mean, including how album pricing works.
Track Download buttons
The track price will be debited from your account.
You will not be charged for this track.
Re-purchase a previously downloaded track. The track price will be debited from your account.
You will see this button if we detect that a track has failed to download completely. Click to retry your download without charge.
Downloading albums and Album pricing
This button lets you download an entire album with one click. The figure in parentheses shows how much will be debited from your account balance for the album. You will notice that the number does not necessarily correspond to the number of tracks on an album because some albums offer special album pricing.
Album Pricing Note: album pricing is currently available for US members only. An easy way to understand the album pricing is to think of it like buying a CD. The cost for an album is independent of the track count (just like a CD). Some albums won’t offer album pricing at all: the amount required to download the entire album equals the number of tracks at a set individual price. More often, you’ll see albums offered a lower cost when purchased as a whole rather than separately by track. Less often you’ll see an album priced higher when it has a few number of tracks, most likely in the case of albums comprised of very long tracks.
Multi-Disc Albums Some multi-disc sets are available as individual albums; others will only be available as a complete set.
You’ll see this button
when an album is offered as a promotional download for no charge.
You’ll see this button
after you have purchased one or more tracks from an album. The cost of the tracks you’ve already downloaded will be applied to the overall cost of the full album download. If, for example, you’ve already downloaded 2 tracks at .49 cents a piece from an album which cost $7.00, (as explained in Album pricing above) your track purchases are subtracted, giving you the complete album for just $6.02!

Q: Why are some of the tracks I downloaded from an album not counted towards the complete album price?
A: Sometimes we are not able to count free tracks toward the complete purchase of an album. In that case we’ll inform you on the album page. “Free downloads” include your free trial or bonus balance, free promotional tracks and Free Daily Download tracks. The price of tracks downloaded with your paid (normal membership) balance will always counted toward a discount on the full album price.
Q: Why do I have to download all the discs in a set to get a discount? Can’t this be pro-rated?
A: Much like physical CDs, some multi-disc sets are offered at a discount only when you purchase the entire set. As with other releases offering album pricing, a discount applies to a full album download, not individual tracks.
Q: I saw the price required for a full album download change. Why?
A: When you download tracks from an album your purchase is applied towards the purchase price of a full album download. You will see the amount required to download a complete album reduce after each track download. Because we document your downloads, you can download tracks from an album today then return later and still get the complete album download discount.
Q: I downloaded an album track by track but did not receive a full album download discount. Shouldn’t I get the discount?
A: A full album discount is only applied when you choose the full album, or complete album, download option. When you download tracks individually you are debited track by track. So if you think you’re going to want the whole album make sure you choose the Complete Album button and get your discount.
Q: What does the DEAL label on an album page mean?
A: When browsing you’ll sometimes see a DEAL label next to an album title: DEAL alerts you that a discount is offered on a complete album download compared to individual downloads of all tracks on the album. If you have downloaded individual tracks you can still get the complete album discount if you choose the “complete album” option.
Q: How can a 5 track album cost the same as an album with more tracks?
A: Album pricing on eMusic is similar to the way physical CDs are priced. The cost of an album is independent of the track count (just like a CD). Usually this happens when an album is comprised of very long tracks, but it may also be due to a record label requirement.
Q: Why are some tracks Album-only?
A: A track designated Album-only means it is available only as part of a complete album download. Some record label licensing agreements do not allow us to make individual tracks available from certain albums. We say, better all than nothing!
Q: I saw a “Sorry this album is not available in your country” message – what’s up with that?
A: Of course we want to make all of the music we carry available to members everywhere and we make every effort to make that happen. However, all music licensing and distribution is subject to territorial restrictions by the record label.
