About Fax Label

Six years after the birth of Fax records in Frankfurt, Germany, it is going from strength to strength... over those years it has championed ambient music, been a catalyst for the collaboration between many artists, and released almost 250 titles on an independent artist run label. Over these years we have seen a natural evolution of styles of electronic music. Each piece of music created has played a part in this, just as every artist / dj / musician / thinker / dancer is a part of this intelligent evolving organism.

The emergence of new technology has always influenced the rise of new forms of creativity: we have seen how photography transformed the representational art world, we have seen how the birth of the compact disc has brought about the growth of long range recordings that can last up to 74-80 minutes. We call it ambient.

Currently, tools like the internet and computers and digital recording media are progressively making communication easier, faster and less crackly, and they have proportionately increased the proliferation of new music into the four corners of the world. As our planet seems to become a smaller place we are becoming more multiculturally aware, music is integrating more and more, and different styles are now cross-pollinating to create new dynamic forms that could not have been imagined a few years ago.

Who can say what changes we will experience in the near future, maybe we will be able to buy recordings that are three hours of continuous music, maybe we will be able to access high quality recordings via a fast internet line from a hard drive, enabling somebody to 'own' access to the entire back-catalog of a label or a musician without ever having to physically own the discs... who can imagine what it will be like... One thing we can be sure of, Fax will be at the forefront of musical innovation as we enter an exciting new cycle of the next thousand years.

To all the musicians / artists / djs / distributors /stores / individuals who have played a part in Fax's growth in the past - we salute you ! -- (P. Kuhlmann)
