Metal Without Grunting Demon Vocals by EASILYignored
"I started a message board discussion (http://www.emusic.com/messageboard/viewTopic.html?topicId=67850) with this:
I'm looking for good metal but eMusic doesn't seem to be a good place for it. Any suggestions that would appeal to someone who likes Nine Inch Nails, Tool and Iron Maiden. I have no interest in death metal and I hate singers who do evil demon grunts instead of singing. Also I would prefer the lyrics to be sung in English. I like prog-rock so prog-metal is of interest to me (I have Dream Theatre albums but I find them to be a bit bland).
This is the results of the suggestions I received.

There is nothing wrong with this but I can't say that I like it much. Seems a bit bland and sounds very dated to the eighties even though it was released in 1996. I tried to listen to it for a second time but had to give up a few tracks from the end as it was so flat and uninspiring.
Apparently this is the orginal album with a few alterations such as live drums instead of a drum machine.

Italian jazz-metal concept album about colours. It will take a while for me to work out if they are any good or not. At the moment I think they sound good, but not great. Probably the most intreging band I downloaded.
They shout a bit too much and I can't make out a word they're singing (I assume it's in English) but I don't mind. I just treat it as instrumental music and don't even try to work out the words.

"I sold my CD of this to a 2nd hand shop as I disliked it so much. They're trying to be Iron Maiden and failing. Unappetising music with annoyingly strained vocals. The second disc is missing from eMusic. It contained a dreadful 30 minute song about Gettysburg. The booklet gave you a detailed timeline so you could follow the unintelligable lyrics. Don't waste downloads on this.

"I downloaded the complete album except track 6 Velvet as it's pointless filler.
Glossily produced metal with very clear vocals. The production reminds me of Use Your Illusion era Guns N' Roses and the songwriting of Operation: Mindcrime era Queensrych.
Good music.

"I ordered a 10 disc box set called Sand & Mercury - The Complete Century Media Years by The Gathering. Seems to have all the albums, some rarities and some live discs.
Mandylion is the best album. After that the albums become a bit bland. The singer is very well regarded, but I'm not that impressed with her. I can't hear the words properly and her voice seems a bit featureless.
