Best Live Albums by 2nzfan

"What makes a great live album? First, acknowledging that live albums are mostly for the performer's fans; very few capture the broad public. Second, capturing a performance; nothing is more dull to a fan than a live album yanked from every show on a tour, polished up in the studio to eliminate the flaws and quirks, and minimizing the audience. No, a great live album captures the essence of the performer performing at the moment. It records the audience providing feedback through applause and calls, and the performer responding to the audience. It sounds live - with the reverb, the mistakes, the atmosphere all part of the music. And last, it captures the performer performing the music - which sounds redundant, but is a mistake so many recordings make. Often the performer puts out a live album that sounds like the studio recordings with a little audience in-between. No! Fans want the jams, the alternate arrangements, the improvisations! That is why some music is better caught live than others; rock, blues, and jazz are perfect for the live album; classical, techno, and hip hop for the studio.

The best live albums showcase why the performer makes music."

"This is a curiosity live, especially ..." more

"This is a curiosity live, especially since the music is industrial/ambient/post-rock. Toss in the fact that it is just two guys on stage, and this is a accomplishment. The music style is definitely niche, but the musicianship and creativity very impressive. If one likes this style of music, this performance does grow on you (pun intended)." less

"After several listens the most striki..." more

"After several listens the most striking thing about this session is how relaxed the group is, and how it shows in a playful looseness in the songs. They knew they were recording (you can hear Cannonball mention it), and yet it is a very intimate concert. Each player gets plenty of space and time, and during solos you can hear band members enthusiastically urging each other on. This recording is like sitting in a small club with one heckuva band playing; next best thing to actually being there." less

"This set illustrates why Louis Armstr..." more

"This set illustrates why Louis Armstrong was both a highly regarded musician - regarded by many as the seminal figure in advancing jazz beyond its Dixieland roots - and popular entertainer. Armstrong and band blow hard, play hard, and have fun - and you can hear it as if you were practically on stage with them." less

"Short, but so sweet; this mini live E..." more

"Short, but so sweet; this mini live EP features not just Art Blakey, but BOTH Marsalis brothers, Wynton and Brandon. They all deliver with a lively, rollicking performance that is fun and educational at the same time." less

"Chris Smither's music demands an inti..." more

"Chris Smither's music demands an intimate setting, and this live set captures the songsmith perfectly and completely, including the stories and banter with the audience between numbers. Alone on his acoustic guitar, this is as live as one can be, with no net below, and this is a great performance. Blues, folk, folk pop from a master song writer and singular musician." less

"A great guitarist, a great songwriter..." more

"A great guitarist, a great songwriter, and a great performer gets caught live in pristine setting. Singer-songwriters are often at their best in live settings, as they really feed off the energy and feedback from the audience. On this set, some of Thompson's best songs show their strengths with a band of stellar musicians." less

"Critics first comment on the quality ..." more

"Critics first comment on the quality of this recording before addressing the music and the performance. But what most critics don't acknowledge is that fans of live albums LIKE the flaws that make it a unique and singular performance. That is why bootlegs persist to this day - that desire to have the performance again. This sprawling, majestic album sounds almost like a bootleg, with the cavernous setting providing sonic background, and the band - just a trio - out there, alone, rocking the house down. This performance shows why it was called prog ROCK, because ELP do, the songs stripped down to their essentials and played hard." less

"The critics keep hoping that Jay Farr..." more

"The critics keep hoping that Jay Farrar will become the next musical legend along the lines of Willie Guthrie (an idol of Farrar's). Pretty tall order, and one a musician should pretty much ignore. This pairing with backing band Canyon is inspired, and Farrar and Canyon deliver a rousing set of plain ol' rock-and-roll with alt.country overtones. The musicianship is excellent, the tunes selected showcased beautifully, and the energy is high throughout, with two covers romped through at the end to close the show. Live albums are mostly for the fans, and this one is - though if you put it on a party of rock lovers, you will get some air guitar." less
