I have quite a few lists. Every one of them is out of date. This generally applies to the rest of my life as well.

Accessible-ish Soul Note/Black Sain-
t by timabouttown

"Okay, mostly Soul Note. Here's the thing. Jazz doesn't have to be for old folks. It doesn't have to be conservative. But lawdy, lawdy, it doesn't have to give you a headache either...and some of the stuff on these two labels definitely does. But some of it offers a mix of adventure and melody that feels just about right. Even on the records on this list, you'll probably find a track or two that's worth skipping. Trust me, you'll be able to tell from the samples right quick. But if you're looking to venture a bit off the beaten path, these are some genuinely wonderful places to start."

"You can look at the players and imagi..." more

"You can look at the players and imagine how good this is going to be: it's better. For an album billed as "Charlie Haden, with..." (the album cover art here cuts that off!), the only thing missing is more bass: Charlie is clearly more the executive producer, gathering the perfect ensemble to play these songs. Baker shines, just six months before his death, and Higgins amazes throughout. Charlie steps to the front on 'round Midnight, with a truly beautiful solo. This one is a gem from start to finish. Download it already." less

"Honker: #2"

"Talk about leaving 'em wanting more! ..." more

"Talk about leaving 'em wanting more! This is darn near perfect in every way. Cochrane (piano), Harrell (trumpet) and Malach (bass) especially stand out to me, but the whole band is locked in. Truly extraordinary." less

"Paolino is a marvelous double-bassist..." more

"Paolino is a marvelous double-bassist, Kenny Wheeler in fine, fine form.

Honkers: #2, 5" less

"I had no idea who Herbie Nichols was,..." more

"I had no idea who Herbie Nichols was, and didn't even think to look it up until well after I started enjoying this remarkable record. It showed up in searches for musicians I wanted to hear more by, notably Kimbrough (piano), Horton (flug - elhor - n,trumpet), and Nash (sax). While Allison's bass is strong, I was even more struck by Horner's drums - locked in the pocket. Highly recom - mende - dto anyone looking for adven - turou - s,melodic interplay, without fear of headaches or rolling eyes from pointless noodling." less
