middle baroque with "big-band" cont-
inuo by 1653
"These are my favorite albums with instrumental music from the baroque era - mainly 17th century. On most of them you can hear the sound of period instruments. The continuo group often consists of organ, lute or theorbo as harmonic instruments as well as melodic bass instruments like cello, viola da gamba, or violone. This is sometimes called a "big band" continuo and results in a much richer sound than just one harpsichord plus cello.
A few 18th century composers are also listed here: Telemann, Platti, Locatelli, Venturini and Leclair. My possible explanation for that: they were largely influenced by Corelli."

"Close your eyes and this music will send you straight away into a palazzo in Venice. Surprisingly, these sonatas were composed in Frankfurt (very likely in 1715) and the name of the composer is neither Legrenzi nor Marcello. It was Telemann. Exciting music, beautifully played by members of the FBO - as usual with crisp and lively sound. Maybe those 19th century critics and scholars who dismissed Telemann as Kleinmeister didn’t know the sonatas with three or more instruments and basso continuo (TWV 43 and TWV 44). Of course they had no chance to realize how much pleasure and joy they bring when played by modern by ensembles with original instruments. For another example see the album by “Harmonie universelle”. If 30 credits are too much for you to download the whole album, try the sextet in B major. For me it is the most beautiful piece on this album." less

"My favorite album is 'Harmonia artificiosa' played by 'The Rare Fruits Council'. This new album with the Fidicinium sonatas by Biber contains less spectacular music. But the performance and the sound of 'Les Plaisirs du Parnasse' is so beautiful that it may challenge the status of the older album as my all-time favorite." less

"The title of the sonatas translates as 'Sonatas Appro - priat - eto the Altar or the Court'. At least sonata 4 played by the Dutch ensemble is also suitable for The Wedding Dance in a Barn. Obviously, the Comba - ttime - ntoconsort was eager to deliver an even more spect - acula - rperfo - rmanc - ethan The Rare Fruits Council. On emusic you can compare it with an older recording by the Purcell Quartet." less

"There were three prominent violin virtuosos in the German speaking countries of the 17th century, Biber, Walther and Westhoff. To date the ensemble ‘Les Plaisirs du Parnasse’ has released three albums, one for each of these three composers. All are available at emusic now. This is the first recording of the six sonatas with basso continuo (1694) by Johann Paul Westhoff. The music is full of surprises. The sound of the ensemble is soft and warm and highlights beaut - ifull - ythe virtuosity of violin part. Other wonderful samples of music played by this ensemble can be found here: lespl - aisir - sdupa - rnass - e.com(click on "Audio Conce - rts") - .I hope similar albums by this ensemble will follow soon." less
